Pivot points in loaders, etc

G'day,

I work for a family vegetable farm and we try to build as many implements in house as we can, I do all the design & building work my self but I am self taught

Basically my question is, alot of the equipment I am making is getting bigger and bigger which needs to fold up. I was wondering if anyone could shed light on why the pins in basically any earth moving equipment you see fixed and not able to rotate like say the pin in a door. The item i am rebuilding now had hinges similar to really large door hinges (with a 38mm shaft) they are very flogged out now but the implement is over 10 years old. I am just trying to work out a way make it last a bit longer.

its fixed in one part so you don't have to repair both pieces......mike

What mrmikey said... limits the movement between pivot points to one place. Normally to the area with the larger surface area, takes longer to wear the more square inches of greaseable contact area you have.

The use of replaceable bushings will also help keep the pivot serviceable. I am no expert on equipment but I can say that personally, I have replaced far more bushings than pins. I don't buy anything new and most machines I've had needed some TLC where sloppy pivot points were concerned. New bushings used with the old pins have almost always renewed them to near or like new operation.

The wear point is on only one part, not both. In your picture, the yellow piece has a bushing pressed in. The top piece does not have a bushing. The use of the tab ensures the pin will not rotate where there is no bushing.
