Post Hole Digger Comparision

I'm looking to add a PHD to my attachments for my 47HP TYM. I'm looking for 12" capacity. Here are the options.

1. from Dealer for $1,250
2. from TSC, for $650. That is half the price!

I'm looking to use it for planting a few hundred trees each year. Is the dealer on worth twice the price?
Everything at every dealer is twice the price but not twice as nice. TSC augers are just as good as the dealers. Of course the dealer will love to skim an extra 600 off of you just for the heck of it. Dealer gets the same ones from China or India that the other stores get. I've had two made out of car rear differential gear boxes. They're still going, from the 1950"s.

I bought the equivalent of a County Line PHD for my first fence installation 25 years ago. It was a great implement and worked well. For trees I would recommend the tree type auger that Leonz recommends.
I redid my fence in 2021 and opted to get an ssqa hydraulic auger. Night and day difference! Easy to position, a lot of auger bit options, reverse direction, and down pressure make it a very easy and quick operation. They do cost significantly more though.

If you're doing a lot of holes on a regular basis an ssqa hydraulic auger may be worth the investment.

You may want to consider a SSQA auger. Easier to connect, no neck strain, can reverse if you hit something solid, may be tax deducable if starting tree farm.

Using planning auger to remove tree stump

I have been tempted to try the stump head on my Land Pride SA20. Have you used it on larger stumps with any success? If it would chip away at a 2-3' stump I would be interested.
Tell me about your experiences, and price if you don't mind.

also put some thought into the depth you want to dig and soil type. Both stressors on a phd.

I am in sandy soil, no rocks/stones/pebbles. Little to no stress using big bore augers to 7' depths.

My TSC phd is plenty sufficient for these light and danger free soil area.

Cheers

Danuser are you working with a partner or solo on that many holes? maybe explain application in more detail. Mine is bullet proof, but w/a 9" auger. Interested to hear of the tree planting, assuming pines?

Pay attention to the cutting sequence drawing. Small tractor with low oil flow, the auger can screw in and take too large of a bite. Reverse auger 1/2 turn, lift FEL to reduce down pressure and auger more. May have to cycle FEL in and out of float for some stumps.

I built a hydraulic driven auger that mounts to the side of my bucket and will also slip into the 2" hitch receiver on a QA plate. Operates off of the loader hydraulic controls. Just a garage sale motor with a cylindrical adapter to mount the auger. Plenty of down-force if needed. Reversible in case it runs into a boulder. Biggest benefit is setting it to a location that I can eyeball without having to have a hawk's neck. Plus minor angle corrections can be make using the loader controls instead of shifting the transmission back & forth. At my place, the deer break the fence posts year 'round. With this setup, the bucket can push the existing wire fence away enough to drill a replacement hole without tangling it up in the auger.

I bought a cheapo PHD, it never worked well in tough soil, so I got rid of it and bought a Bush Hog brand PHD, night and day difference, it's really that much better!

I wasn't aware that these stump grinders existed. This seems to be intended for the skid steer market, but will they work on a 3 point hitch type of PHD? There's no reverse on the 3PH PHD so I'm not sure how well they'd work. I can see them working well in one direction but then needing to be extracted manually.
