So your 27kw can be had for 2549$ + $6000 for the 54+hp tractor...so you are about $8549 for the combination versus guardian standby steel/aluminum case 25kw 9300$

Close to even...and with the stand-alone...you have your tractor available to handle all those trees that will be knocked down by the storm that knocked out your power...

In that example.. i like the tractor and pto gen much better.....After all.. I can't hop on the guardian standby generator and disconnect it from the house and go move trees!


( Besides.. if i need trees moved.. I'll hop on one of my 3 loader equipped tractors and go at it.. or if they are bigguns'.. I'll hop on my 95hp tractor and start dragging them while the 70hp jobs keeps the lights on... )

I agree with the fact of having another motor around to maintain being a pain. I like even better having the tractor freed up to take care of tree's or clean up after a storm. My Dad is 80 and my Mom and Stepdad live next door to him. If the power goes out I have to make sure they are ok. Right now I have 2 generators. A 5KW unit and a 8.5 KW unit. That will keep both of them powered up for as long as we have gas. The 8.5 KW unit I picked up at this auction site brand new with Electric start on wheels for $500. Right now if you look at their site they have a 25 KW on trailer and a 50 KW Generator being auctioned. We aren't allowed to put links on here so do a Search for Bidadoo auctions and look at some of the toys they have. PS this isn't a paid advertisement as I am not associated with them at all.

I think we only need about a 12kw pto generator but have a larger tractor(105 kubota)Is it necessary to crank the diesel all the way up to turn the pto at 540.With that much HP wouldn't I waste fuel plus wear at higher engine RPM?Is there a way to run the engine at about 1800 & still generate 12KW?

You can Gen 12KW at a slower speed it just won't be 60 Hz which will cause all kinds of problems to motors and other frequency sensitive equip.

If the gen to designed to run at 540 to produce 60 Hz current then you MUST run it at 540 no matter what the load (kw).

As another poster said.. you need to run the pto gen at the rated pto speed for it to make the correct frequency power.

Your machine is made to run at it's rated pto rpm

Waste fuel? For the most part, fuel usage is based on load.

For instance.. I have a 70hp and a 95hp diesel tractor.. I have cut my pasture with both of them using a 10' mower.. the 70hp tractor uses 5g of diesels to cut the pasture. Guess what.. so does the 95 hp tractor! What does that tell us? It tells us that just because a tractor can make 'X' power doesn't mean it always is.. fuel is used based on the power requirement of the job. You may geat small differences based on machine size and weight if one machine weighs alot mor ethan another as that will be 'overhead'.. but the actual fuel consumed to power generated ratio should be pretty close.

I nominate you for Generator General! Here, the Virgin Islands, the home of power outages, these issues are huge. Years ago with simple electronics, mule powered generators were probably ok. Now, with circuit boards on everything including gas stoves, trash power will be your downfall. A quality gasoline powered genset, between 5 and 15kw will provide clean, safe and relatively economical power.

I can't afford a 15/20kw diesel genset but get by quite nicely with a 7.5kw gasoline (Honda) powered unit connected by transfer switch which limits circuits energized to those most necessary, and within the output capability.

While I would love to have an 1800 rpm genset humming quietly, the 3600rpm Honda 13 HP (Porter Cable Branded) keeps me going and has the onboard controls to deliver relatively clean power. I am able to run Sat TV, computers, water pump, lights, etc. without damage. EVERYTHING delicate here is on at least a surge protector courtesy of our municipal (variable voltage/cycle) provider.

We have at least four outages per week and this doesn't include over/under voltage episodes and one can only guess at the htz!

The only source worse than Virgin Island Water and Power Authority would be a tractor at variable rpms driving a genset with unknown controls pumping electrons into all your equipments. (Mule/Ox Power). In addition to extended Hurricane outages, we have "rotating outages" where the municipal capacity cannot serve the entire feeder load and "unexpected outages" that occur, "just because".

Conclusion: Buy a generator/driver combination unless your needs are grounded in 1955.
