Hi guys. It's been a while since I've run into a problem, but I've got one now. I had to get a new PTO shaft for my PHD. TS had one the right length and shaft size, but the yokes are much larger than what came with my Speeco. I didn't see that as a problem, so I bought it. The problem is the holes for the shear pin are much smaller than the typical 5/16". I'd have to take the plastic guard off to measure them, but they look like I'd be hard pressed to get a 1/4" bolt through them. Is this normal? Am I supposed to drill them out (1/2" thick metal, two sides)? Are we supposed to be using smaller shear pins now? Any help would be appreciated. My one day project could very well run into three the way things are going... or longer if I have to special order a Speeco shaft in. And sorry for the run on paragraph. The enter button is not dropping me down a line for some reason :confused:

If the holes in the yokes are smaller than the hole in your shaft, I would drill it out to the larger diameter.

The yokes should be cast, so they won't be very hard to drill. Get a good, sharp, (preferably new) drill bit, and put oil on it as you cut.

Yeah, it just seems odd the holes would come that way.
I've got a call in to TS just to see how long to order one in and how much the *right* PTO shaft would be before I go to work adapting this one to work.

i'd do what bigfoot62 said and not blink an eye.

I'n some cases I have even drileld new cross holes in an input shaft perp to an original hole in a different location.. in this case.. i'd drill the yoke and go..

Thanks soundguy. And you were right. I haven't had to use that PTO generator since I got it, lol.

I'm glad I took the time to ask if anyone has run into this before and wait for the replies. In the meantime I called TS up and asked them what the OEM one from Speeco would cost. $129 plus shipping. This one cost $269! So needless to say no modifications will be done and it's going back when the other one comes in. My new mailbox doesn't need to go in that bad.

When you buy a generic shaft for a specific application, some adapting might be required. Drilling out the yoke isn't a big deal. Having the centers of both sides already located makes it a easy task.

It doesn't often work out that way for sure.

When you buy a generic shaft for a specific application, some adapting might be required. Drilling out the yoke isn't a big deal. Having the centers of both sides already located makes it a easy task.

1/2" is common on some of the stuff i run. :)

There is no standard size for shear pin to HP rating of a gear box, so a generic after market shaft will likely have a small hole, to serve as pilot hole, so it can be drilled to fit.
