On my 24D theres facility for a screw on cap to cover the PTO stub when its not in use. Do these caps follow a standard or does each mfg make up their own spec? In other words can a cap be gotten from a general tractor parts store? jimg

A pto cap. Now there's a good idea. Mine's usually all covered with dirt when I connect up. Can't be good for splines. I think I'll make one. Maybe a tennis ball? Condom would be the right size but people might talk. Beer can?

The beer can might work but I doubt the other 2 would. I believe the idea is to insulate any rotation of the stub from the outside world. A cap that uses the existing threads would be ideal...which brings me back to the original inquiry. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I believe the ford/nh pto stub cap is a standard item that hasn't changed much since the late 50's when the 1 3/8 pto became standard. And really.. the only change was length.. the threads are still the same... for instance, the plastic cap on my 1997 NH will screw into the cap holder on my 1952 8n.. though it is big, as the 8n had the shorter 1 1/8 pto stub, etc.

NH should have the plastic pto cap for your tractor.. I'm really surprised they didn't have one on when you bought it.. I would think that was a'safety' item. If the price is over 12 bucks, get a universal ford cap from tractor supply co.. they are aluminum too!.. not plastic.

I like the aluminum ones for durability.. though the plastic one i got 'free' is working.. etc.

On my BX22, the PTO cover snaps in to place, there aren't threads so they may be standard within a manufacturer but doesn't sound like the cap with threads would work on my Kubota?

Thanx! I did get one but the threads were nuked. To get it to stay in place I have to mess about w/ it. I figure its just a matter of time before it falls off and gets crushed. I had hoped to get a cap from a source other than NH b/c it would likely be cheaper. Ill be by a TSC this coming week and I'll look for one then. THanx again. jimg

I lost mine the first 100 hours. I left it on the fender. A couple days later, I noticed grey chunks all over the field where I had just mowed /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif.

If and when I replace it, I will probably rig up a "keeper" chain so that I can unscrew it and leave it hanging.

Dave,

Mark,
Great idea! The only problem I see w/ that if its hang down it may get ripped off by snagging on something. Seems youd need some means of keeping it out of the way.

Mine is attached with two small bolts. When removed, replace the bolts in the holes and put the cap in the tool box. That sounds good, but rarely happens. I generally just leave it off, and wipe the crud off the stub when I hook to the PTO...

All you guys are way too FANCY...

Get a peice of rubber hose at the auto store with a 1-3/8" inside diameter (radiator hose or such), buy a foot. Cut the length you need, gob some grease in it and push it over the pto shaft. That way, the splines are greased, not your hand. They are kept clean and you have some more to make a new one out of in case you leave it on the fender.

That's what we do with our tractors. Kubota is nice enough to provide just such a hose (guard) with the 5030.

KEEP IT SIMPLE!!!

I thought my tennis ball idea was simple. But the hose will probably work better. Since I don't have any threads to screw something nice on...

Yeah, but wasn't it a clear neoprene hose, like I got with my B2710, instead of an old black radiator hose? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

The only problem with the hose/cap idea, is that while it protects the pto stub.. it does very little for safety, as that shaft, if spinning without an implement hooked up, can suck up stuff. This is no big deal for the newer tractors with seperate pto controols / independent / 2 stage clutches, etc.. but for some of the older tractors, the pto running was a fact of life..( Think 9n, 2n, 8n, fergie to/e 20, 30.. etc ) and that cap made it safer.

Ah. My very young age, or more honestly my lack of experience, is the reason I wasn't aware the old tractors had running ptos all the time. Must make it hard to hook up implements (sorry, just kidding). Mine shuts off so safety is not an issue unless someone kicks in pto while someone is in back. Since both "someones" are likely me, and since I shut tractor off to hook up implements, I should be okay. In fact I'd be okay as long as someone is not in seat as tractor would shut off if pto is engaged. Still, the cap is a good idea, I just don't have a way to attach one. So it's a rubber hose for me, or rather for my tractor.

Mine was prettier, Daryl. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Reckon those were Kubota OEM or a dealer provided accessory? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That is correct. Another reason for the cap as opposed to the hose/slip on cover is that the cap is also designed to protect the seals around the shaft as well as to protect someone from contacting a spinning shaft.

I'm really surprised kubota doesn't provide some sort of mounting system for a pto cap / cover... even many chineese tractors, like jinma's have a cap/cover. I don't think i would like the pto sitting exposed all the time...

On my 2910 there's a black plastic cap that "snaps" into place.
