PTO stub cap

All you guys are way too FANCY...

Get a peice of rubber hose at the auto store with a 1-3/8" inside diameter (radiator hose or such), buy a foot. Cut the length you need, gob some grease in it and push it over the pto shaft. That way, the splines are greased, not your hand. They are kept clean and you have some more to make a new one out of in case you leave it on the fender.

That's what we do with our tractors. Kubota is nice enough to provide just such a hose (guard) with the 5030.

KEEP IT SIMPLE!!!

I thought my tennis ball idea was simple. But the hose will probably work better. Since I don't have any threads to screw something nice on...

Yeah, but wasn't it a clear neoprene hose, like I got with my B2710, instead of an old black radiator hose? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

The only problem with the hose/cap idea, is that while it protects the pto stub.. it does very little for safety, as that shaft, if spinning without an implement hooked up, can suck up stuff. This is no big deal for the newer tractors with seperate pto controols / independent / 2 stage clutches, etc.. but for some of the older tractors, the pto running was a fact of life..( Think 9n, 2n, 8n, fergie to/e 20, 30.. etc ) and that cap made it safer.

Ah. My very young age, or more honestly my lack of experience, is the reason I wasn't aware the old tractors had running ptos all the time. Must make it hard to hook up implements (sorry, just kidding). Mine shuts off so safety is not an issue unless someone kicks in pto while someone is in back. Since both "someones" are likely me, and since I shut tractor off to hook up implements, I should be okay. In fact I'd be okay as long as someone is not in seat as tractor would shut off if pto is engaged. Still, the cap is a good idea, I just don't have a way to attach one. So it's a rubber hose for me, or rather for my tractor.

Mine was prettier, Daryl. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Reckon those were Kubota OEM or a dealer provided accessory? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That is correct. Another reason for the cap as opposed to the hose/slip on cover is that the cap is also designed to protect the seals around the shaft as well as to protect someone from contacting a spinning shaft.

I'm really surprised kubota doesn't provide some sort of mounting system for a pto cap / cover... even many chineese tractors, like jinma's have a cap/cover. I don't think i would like the pto sitting exposed all the time...

On my 2910 there's a black plastic cap that "snaps" into place.
