just like snake oil additives, if TP is a proven filter medium, why haven't manu gone that route on new vehicles? can't imagine doing that myself.

I never used the Luberfiner filters, having only read of paper towel rolls being used in them. The Motorguard TP filters that I used were all bypass filters. The only reason I stopped using them is that TP rolls were shortened around 15-20 years ago, and the Motorguard canister wouldn't slightly crush them down anymore.

Bypass filtration is a long way from "snake" oil they are a proven method of cleaning oil to reduce engine wear. And yes many of them used TP as a filter media.
They are still common and available.

When has any manufacture gone the extra mile to prevent wear.
The large stationary and many performance engines use much better and more expensive lubrication systems.
Pre and post lubrication, bypass filtration, and accusump type systems are in common use in heavy industrial engines.

Our new car warranty covers oil changes at 10k. This is only for a 2 year period. I changed the oil at 5k to get the one change at 10k free at the dealer. From what I read who knows what oil they have in those bulk systems. I do my own changes at 4k religiously . At current shop rates I want to fend off future expensive down time. New engines have tight clearances and super thin oil. Don't rely on some of the aftermarket warranty companies to pay when it self expires. Nothing is covered one hundred percent reading the fine print. Good proper maintenance will save repair costs.

I would pay to avoid "free" oil changes at a dealer. Have forfeited about a dozen of them.

Not only have people ended up with the wrong oil in their vehicles, there has been other collateral damage.

I buy vehicles at dealers, but after that I stay away and maintain them myself. Not necessarily following any time based maintenance schedules even if it technically means voiding the warranty.

Warranty work would involve dealer visits, so...But I have had parts sent to me under warranty.

So many things affect the life of oil, mainly your driving conditions. I remember doing 3,000 mile oil changes religiously. Got busy, drove 8,500 miles. Checked the oil, but did not do an analysis. I could still see thru the oil on the dipstick. I backed way off on my changes. And your engine is not a closed container, it see's air (with moisture) and it see's fuel.
A lot of things go into those oil anylisers built into your car.
oils are better, your car doesn't dump fuel into the oil like it used to, ect. I would think if the recommended change is 10K and you do the oil at 5 and the filter at 10, you would be fine. Most of my equipment I do annually, my daily driven truck being the exception.
