SCAMM?

i received this e mail(attachment) about 10:30 this evening. although i have a n acct. with a bank with a similar name, i do beleive this is theft idenity attempt. of course i did not click on the link. but i wonder who i could report this to? read the email and let me know what u guys think.

In my humble opinion it is a scam, best report this to the FBI, or local fraud agent of your local PD. If this was real they would have asked you to visit the local branch office and not ask for this information via Email or by phone .

Complete scam. Notice that the return address is a private (juno) address, not a bank address. This is the 1st clue. Secondly, a bank will always ask you to call them, not respond to an email or website.

If they do ask you to call them, look up the 800 number for the bank and call back on that line, do not call back on the provided phone number. Tell them you recieved a suspicious email and they will take it from there.

Forward this email to your internet provider support center, the local consumer affairs office, and the local DA.

oh i absolutly beleive it is an attempt at identy theft. that is why i printed it, scanned it and posted it. i will call the bank although it is not their bank, but they will be interested to know that they are using a take off of the banks name. did think to call isp, but never thought of the FBI. i wonder how how many folks will click that link and give out their account no. to VERIFY THEIR IDENTY? IT TICKS ME OFF THAT SOME that tey even do this stuff, but ticks me off more that they think i am so stupid as to fall for it.

Could be a scam, more likely a hoax. I tried usbank.com, and it appears to be a legitimate site for the bank. Since I don't have any accounts there, I decided to take a chance and type in the rest of the URL, and all I got was a 404 error - page not found. So, I'm not quite sure how the sender would benefit by your clicking the link. Maybe it's some sort of scheme to annoy the bank...

Frank, I got that one last night too. I have a virus blocker with my ISP, and they sent me the following email.


The CoreComm Defender virus filter has detected a virus
and prevented you from becoming infected by destroying
the infected email message.

Aha! A virus! That's why when I typed in the URL and went to the US Bank page I had no problems and found nothing about account verification -- because I wasn't clicking on it from your Email. If you had clicked on it, it would have loaded the virus.

So, the best defense remains, regardless of whether it's phishing or a virus, don't click on nothin! I've gotten to the point where I won't click on anything, not even from a trusted sender; unless I verify with them that they sent it. My son-in-law has gotten used to sending me a separate email to tell me that the pictures of my granddaughter really came from him - he uses wording that no spammer would know.

yes it is a shame! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif that some persons take take a very fine thing like pc'c or the internet and use it for ileagle uses or just to be down right mean and nasty, virsues, spam, scamm's etc.too bad there is not a way to get back at them.

New Scam By Phone

We all receive emails all the time regarding one scam or another; but
last week I REALLY DID get scammed! Both VISA and MasterCard told me that
this scam is currently being worked throughout the Midwest, with some
variance as to the product or amount, and if you are called, just hang up.
My husband was called on Wednesday from "VISA" and I was called in Thursday
from "MasterCard".

name) and I'm calling from the Security and Fraud department at VISA. My
Badge number is 12460.
> Your card has been flagged for an unusual purchase pattern, and I'm

you purchase an Anti-Telemarketing Device for $497.99 from a marketing
company based in Arizona?"

credit to your account. This is a company we have been watching and the

flags most cards. Before your next statement, the credit will be sent to ;
(gives you your address), is that correct?" You say, "Yes".

Then gives you a 6 digit number. "Do you need me to read it again?"

Turn the card over. There are 7 numbers; first 4 are 1234(whatever) the next
3 are the security numbers that verify you are in possession of the card.
These are the numbers you use to make internet purchases to prove you have
the card. Read me the 3 numbers."

not been lost or stolen, and that you still have your card. Do you have any
other questions? Don't hesitate to call back if you do."

told us it was a scam and in the last 15 minutes a new purchase of $497.99

I hit the url to see what would happen. Interestingly enough, citibianks website DID seem to come up properly in the background with a little (suspicous) pop up window in front of it that was asking for my card numbers....hmmmm...I'll just BET it will take letters instead of numbers, so, let's try it

I put in some "fake" numbers that were in fact letters. I think the letters spelled out something similar to telling them to copulate themselves somewhere... seems there wasn't enough room to type all that, so I had to "shorten the words" if /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif ya know what I mean /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Seems not only did that shortened phrase work, it came back telling me my verification process was SUCCESSFUL!!!!

Now in hindsight, I'm forced to wonder if they erroneously meant transmission of my card number was successful, or if my message back to them was successful and they uh...never mind...

I'm forwarding this on to citibank too.

Hmm.. none that I'm aware of, but I admit, I'd not thought of that angle.

Sheesh... can't even tell someone off nowdays without them having an angle on you.

I DO have cookies blocked (to request permission actually) and I deny most all of them except for a handful of places like here.

Thanks for that heads up though... guess next time, I won't be so obvious that THEY were so obvious.
