You want to throw the book at a guy like that. Yet the Big Box Store, probably gave him the string to tie it down.

A bar can be in legal trouble if you leave their place drunk, but someone can drive away from a store with a mattress tied to their roof with string.

Personal responsibility. Only one individual made the decision to drive on the road with a load secured like that. Nobody else caused the accident.

Trying to expand the responsibility to tangentially related people or entities is why we have so **** many rules and insurance charges. Focus on the one who was ultimately responsible.

Not so sure. People are generally stupid and have to be treated as such. The guy tying 2x4s to the roof of his car with string has maybe never done that before. The big box store sees people drive away like that all day long and even gives them the string. There has to be some responsibility in that. I have sold equipment and not allowed someone to leave without securing it properly, giving them or selling them straps.

And the big box stores have seen it done countless times with no problems.
Why would they think one mans way of tying is any more unsafe then the next guys?
Why would/should they think this guy doesn't know how to drive with this load & the next one does?
FAR more of these loads get home safely then don't.

True. And then you could argue that for any size load. And as I have said before, because a load comes loose, doesn't mean immediately someone looses their life. Mostly not.
