Multiple uses for a compact car.
It is most likely so that they can have that two layer rack on top and have it be able to support more than just the gutters would be able to handle.

Each of them, simply exercising their rights, and their insurance.
When I took driver’s education in high school they made sure we knew that having a drivers license and using the roadways was a privilege, not a right.

When I took drivers ed in HS, my Political Science teacher taught the class. He said it wasn't a privilege when we have to pay taxes for the road upkeep, fuel taxes, registration fees and taxes, etc etc etc. It's a right when your elected officials declare the roads as a right-of-way for the public.

You won’t get far with that argument when they suspend your license because of excessive tickets, DWI, etc. Or just simply try letting your license expire and refuse to renew it.

They will convince you very quickly that driving is a privilege not a right.

If the gross vehicle weight of the truck plus the gross vehicle weight of the trailer exceeds 26,001 pounds you need a CDL. It does not matter whether you’re hauling commercially or not. If the DOT pulls you over and checks the gross vehicle ratings on both the truck and the trailer they can write you for not having the CDL.

I have had the DOT pull me over because he ran my tag on the trailer, and when it did not come up as a CDL, his lights went on. The officer was infuriated when he realized he could not give me a ticket for not having a CDL. my truck gross weight is 11,400 pounds. My trader gross weight is derated to 14,500 pounds. This combination puts me at 25,900 pounds. The man then spent 45 minutes trying to find something to write me up on. I made the mistake of using the safety chain hook to also hook the breakaway cable. He told me that it needed to be on a separate attachment point. So I reached in my pocket pulled out a carabiner and hooked the safety cable to the ring in the bed of the truck. I asked him if that was correct and he said yes.

He then went to his car and wrote me an out of service ticket. He stated that I was out of service because of the breakaway cable. When he gave me the out of service ticket I ask him if he did not see me correct the problem. He simply said have a good day turned around and walked away.

By law, I’m not supposed to move the truck until the out of service ticket is corrected. Since I had corrected it with him present, I went on my way.

I then found at the bottom of the ticket and extremely small print were the instructions that I had to sign the ticket that the problem was corrected and fax the ticket into the DOT. Failure to do this would have resulted in a fine of several thousand dollars per day if I was caught running the truck without the correction notice being sent in.

That same DOT cop has now pulled me over four times.
Bad Cop!

Are we all looking forward to autonomous semi-trucks? They’ll soon be here. I wonder if they are going to get their own driving lane. I suppose they will run 24-7? These are the electric models to be released soon.
I think they'd have to give up half their trailer capacity, for the batteries needed...

Just hope the driver does an actual walk around before taking off

Starting out, its all going to be short haul that's going back to the same warehouse every night IMO, long haul will take a lot more infrastructure.
A chain near me is exploring that option:

Exploring Electrification to Understand the Next Generation Truck

09/13/2022 · Reducing our Carbon Footprint

For years, Wegmans has been focused on improving the efficiency and sustainability of its fleet. What that looks like and how we get there continues to evolve as advancements in technology become available for testing, and ultimately brought to market.
The fleet and sustainability teams, once focused on diesel efficiency, now have their eyes set on diesel elimination, a goal made possible by the advent of new technologies. In the past two years, they’ve made huge strides by replacing diesel tractors with compressed natural gas ones and transitioning to fully electric yard trucks.
“Eliminating diesel is our goal for today, but we’re also looking to the future and our ultimate goal of operating a carbon-free fleet. We’re likely a decade or more away from being able to achieve that goal; the technology just isn’t where it needs to be to do the job we need it to do,” explains Matt Harris, Wegmans sustainability manager for energy and fleet technology. “But that doesn’t mean we just sit back and wait. We’re constantly working with technology providers and trialing new technologies to understand what they can and can’t do, and to be part of the innovation process, helping to ensure the technology is headed in a direction that works for real-world applications.”
With that future goal in mind, the team is currently exploring electrification through a trial of the Nikola Tre battery-electric vehicle (BEV) demonstration unit. Trialing new technologies helps the team understand the capabilities and reliability of the technology, the infrastructure needed to operate the vehicle, and how it might fit into our fleet in the future. It also helps them understand if that technology can help them achieve their three main goals – reduce our carbon footprint, reduce noise pollution, and improve safety.
When it comes to measuring the sustainability of a class-8 electric truck, there’s a lot to take into consideration – from the fossil fuels needed to produce and properly dispose of the batteries, to the strain on the electric supply grid – and a lot of questions that still need answers.
“The pilot is all about learning,” says Harris. “We need to understand electrification in order to understand the next generation of trucks – trucks that achieve a lower carbon intensity score than their diesel counterparts through a combination of technologies and the use of cleaner fuels. Those are the trucks that will allow us to bridge the 10-to-20-year gap between now and when a cost-effective, alternative truck is readily available in the marketplace and can truly do what a diesel-powered truck does today – without compromise.”
While a fleet of fully electric trucks isn’t on the horizon, a successful pilot could result in the addition of one, or even a few, electric trucks to our fleet.
“It’s all about the application of the technology,” explains Harris. “During the pilot, we’re using the Nikola demo unit for shuttle work – moving product around Rochester and mixing in a few store deliveries. If the truck performs well, helps us achieve our goals, and makes sense for our business, then there could be a spot for it in our fleet.”

The Tesla semi is an interesting situation. Best estimate now is that the batteries weigh about 10,000 lbs on the 500 mile range model. Sounds like a lot, but subtract the diesel drive train weight (probably at least 4000 lbs) and add the 2000 lb capacity bonus the DOT gives electric trucks because the added weight is in the tractor, and it's not much of a penalty.

Interesting and ironic cause that sounds like what battery powered vehicle manufacturers tried doing in urban areas over 100 yrs ago when there was a battle over steam, ice, and battery power. Ice won obviously but makes sense with modern technology.

They should have a considerably harder driving test to pass to begin with. All you have to do here is drive around the block without wreaking and you pass.
That sounds like my farm tractor exam at age 16. At age 18 you didnt need a license.

Since a year or three there is a real tractor drivers license which takes practical lessons and exams (remember they drive 50kmh and often 50 ton GVW here and often take part in city traffic ) and the pool of silage hauling personnell is quickly depleting, causing large contractors to solely focus on earthmoving during business hours, leaving silage drawing at night to the farmers who go contracting with a few friends at night...
