shingles on a polebarn

I am building a pole barn , ive bought prefabricated trusses. They will be on '2 foot centers, i called lowes and got a quote for shingles and for tin . It was A lot cheaper for shingles. One of my Dads friends is telling me that The osb boards will sway down between the trusses on two foot centers /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif , I am no carpenter so i was wandering if any on has any experience on this. Barn size is 20x32.

7/16" OSB will sag on 2 foot centers. My last home and a lot of the spec homes in my area have rafters 2 foot on center and after about 3 years you can see where the rafters are from the ground. My current home has 5/8" plywood and have not seen any sagging after 5 years.

I would agree with your dads friend, osb is laminated wood about 2 or 3 inches long, plywood is laminate veneers the length of the sheet resulting in much more linear strength.

And it seems to me that plywood holds nails better.

Buckcreek; Between the trusses where the edges of the osb butt up, you can install what we call plyclips. They are an "H" shaped piece of hardware designed to support the edges that are not supported by the trusses. In other words, the long edge of the osb. They come in different sizes for different thicknesses of sheathing. OSB is good stuff, but the price difference between plywood and OSB in this area at least, is almost nothing. Plywood is a little stiffer than OSB. In either case, I would use plyclips. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm building a 30X48 Pole Barn. I used trusses 2' on center w/ 7/16" OSB w/ very heavy shingles. I completed the roof in late April/early May. I have seen no signs of any sagging. BTW, most of the OSB was up last year with tar paper so it has seen a little bit of snow, though we didn't get much last year. I did use the clips as someone else has recommended. I'm also doing OSB on the sidewalls w/ vinyl siding. I also used clips between the horizontal purlins.

I would've like to have gone heavier grade of plywood up on the roof, but I had budgeted about 8 per sheet for the heavier stuff. By the time I went and bought the 7/16" was up to about $16 a sheet if I caught it at a good time other times it was $19. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Thanks for the information. I started reading spencers post last night , alot of my questions got answered there /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif . The 7/16, OSB is around 10.50 here right now. The 5/8 is 17.80, at lowes last night, The 5/8 plywood was the same price, i am going to call a few more places and get some prices today. I coud not believe the price of tin. I called a month ago and got a quote from a metal roofing co. i called back monday and it had raised over a hundred dollars for the same thing. i really wanted to go with the red tin, but i have to use whats cheapest . Im on a tight budget. If i can get the roof up befor really bad weather, i will have to wait for spring to hire out the cement floor. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Buckcreek,

I was advised another good reason to do shingles instead of metal is the metal sweats alot and drips inside if you don't insulate it. You may be ending up with a better building.

For tin.. you don't need a solid roof.. just thin boards nailed across the trusses that the tin is attached. My bank barn is built this way.. never had any problems w/ condensation.. but the the barn is made to dry and store hay.
