When we cut back on our usage the price will drop. but have you noticed that it never drops as fast as it goes up?

Hey Frank,

Yes, and that part of the equation, is probably, the part that is angled to increasing the profit margin and the market's ability to bear, purchasing gas/fuel as a whole, but not upset the apple cart in the process.

Like anything else in America and the rest of this Planet, it's all about the money. Making, Spending, & Saving,, OH MY. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yes, well so what. The europeans have a much better inner and intra-city mass transit system than we do. They actually kept their railroads and street cars going and flourishing.

So I will keep complaining about gas prices because it is not an apple-to-apples comparison. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

We are screwed. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have a consultant at work for the past two years who is from London. Their whole system is geared towards making driving a car expensive as a way to induce people not to.

First they have the high taxes on the gas. So he drives a Ford Ka - a tiny economy car. If you are not a resident of London and drive into London ther is roughly a $15 dollar charge. ALL cars have some sort of transponder and you get a bill in the mail. Then you have to find and pay for parking. If he goes shopping by car every place you stop will charge you $2 to park - drop off mail at the post office $2, get your hair done $2, go for groceries $2.
In spite of this the traffic in London is terrible. He says it takes 2+ hours to go 8 miles to visit his daughter. A 5 hr round trip of 16 miles.

Due to this he walks, bikes or uses public transportation to get around. His car is pushing 10 years he said and has less than 30K miles. Most of that is from vacations.

Phil

BTW, This guy loves coming to the states. Acres of free parking at the WalMart, Cheap gas, miles of rerlatively uncluttered highway and cheap consumer goods.

He was in a funk one day because he rented a shop-vac after doing some remodeling. He rented one as they are expensive to buy and he normally doesn't need one. Right after that he was back in the US and stopped at a HomeDepot and was perturbed to find they had 8 models of shop-vacs for sale all cheaper than what he paid to rent one for a day!

Hey Phil,

If your friend likes WalMart's & Home Depot. Take him to a Harbor Freight Store. Not the best made tools, but the prices can't be beat, and they get the job done. That is if he likes tools and who doesn't, when trying to save money's.

IF we cut back on usage the price will drop? Not so in all instances. Where I live the water co. kept telling people to conserve water. The people responded. The water co. issued a statment saying they had to raise the rates. GET THIS . BECAUSE USAGE HAD DROPPED!!!! These companies are going to make a certain profit. If usage goes down their price per gal. will go up. I have seen this same thing happen in the nat. gas industry. All new nat. gas furnaces that are installed today are at least 80% efficient ( older ones 70-75% efficient) people are now using less nat . gas to heat their homes. What happened ? Nat. gas prices went up,and its not over yet, just wait till oct. ,nov.most utilities are guaranted a certain profit, if they don't hit their mark , they are allowed to raise their rates to reach their profit. If everyone bought motorcycles to save gas. gas would iust go from $2.50 per gal. to $5-6.00 or more per gal. oil companies have us by the ****** & there ain"t much we can do about it.

( Our local TV reported last night that Venezuela gas price $0.12 per gal. )

Yup, but that's because the price of gas is subsidised by the government. Several counties that I have worked in do that, especially in Africa. It's an attempt to buy off civil unrest by the otherwise poor and destitute population. It's also one of the reasons why these countries are essentially bankrupt. Venezuela may have 12 cent gas but it also has one of the highest poverty levels in what should be one of the richest countries in South America. I was in Venezuela and Nigeria when the governments tried to raise the price of gas in order to cut the drain on their economies .... the riots lasted a week before the governments backed down. It was interesting to say the least.

What I think is hurting us as much as anything is the rate of change in the price of gas and lack of subsitution Checking around the web sites gas prices have increased 36% over the last year. For the UK the gas price ( this is from the AA website - a motoring organization ) the increase YOY is 2.6% from july 2004 to july 2005. Tax is taking about 70% of the price and the base price for 2004 is much higher.
Substitution can two ways, perhaps more. Firstly, the high use of gas against diesel for cars and small trucks and secondly the lack of public transport

What's the problem?

I can remember driving a turbocharged diesel Passat @ 180+ km/hr through France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, etc. and paying US $5 a gallon FIFTEEN YEARS AGO.....

I'm happy liquid fuel prices are finally just beginning to rise, necessity if the mother of invention.

I have to agree with Sky Pup, Its just a fact of life we'll have to get used to. Unfortunatly most of salaries havent risen at the same rate. Maybe we'll have to bag lunch or skip that dinner out once a week, or whatever.....It aint going back..
