The hole you had to make for that stump was huge. I don't think a dozer is the right tool for stumping, and either do you since you are bringing in a trackhoe.

That's a beauty though and if you only had a dozen to do than it might be easier than bringing in another machine.

Do the stumps burn black because of the sap?

Maybe I should have put something in the hole as a reference. The depth is only about 18" so it's not all that deep in my opinion.

I'll agree that the track hoe is better suited for this. However, I've got the dozer, the time (about 3-10 minutes per stump), and he charges $105 an hour. Plus, I can do some that he would end up damaging good tree limbs to get his machine to.

They burn black from the sap in the heartwood.

Great pictures TxTom. I'm doing the same thing with a Case 450C on 70 acres. It can take me longer than 3 to 10 minutes however on certain really troublesome stumps...but some small ones I can push out directly without even cutting....those I like. It is a neat feeling to see those stumps come out.

I've tried using my back-hoe, but the dozer is faster.

I couldn't tell which way the 6-7' was measured I thought deep and if that hole was 7 feet deep then we're talking about a crater. If only 18" deep then you did good. Why not do all 60 if it only took 3-10 minutes? That's only 10 hours of work on the long end.

My problem is that the clay gets stuck in the roots and the stump won't burn unless an excavator can flip it around and maybe split it first to remove the dirt.

A dozer is a bit more effective than my 5245 ballasted with a 1 yard dirt bucket, and a chain attached to the top link mount to pull it on the rear wheels and jerk it with the 3pt...
I think my bounce safety valve wont like it either... anyways it works for 2 stumps...
