2 winters ago when I picked up my little kubota I had it in Or. for a few days, it took me most of a day to get 7 of those stumps with my little backhoe.

The logger offered to pull them all at the time with his equiptment for 1200$ but the uncles didn' wanna spend the loggin $ back into the place and figured us 50 something yr old "kids" needed something to do:laughing:

Dead Horse, That's a great tip about using the excavator to pull them like that plus you have the power of the boom pushing as well as the tracks pulling.

Jake waitin for you to get your operation fine tuned and see what you can really do with that as well as how big of stumps you can pull.

wanted to try to keep the pressure at 1000lbs. but a little shakey on the controls, first time out. need more practice at that. video link of 8" cut this fall comming out.

this confirmed the pressure, it was either 2400 or 2600, I have to check again, but holding 1000lbs. steady didn't seem likely, there was too much going on.

Looks to be fairly shallow rooted. I have a bunch of oaks and the like, and man, getting them out of my rocky soil is agony.

I'd be interested to see what kind of pressure it would take to pull mine out.

I've had to resort to a 25K excavator, it makes short work of the stumps.

Looks like you've got a serious pull though, some of those roots are thick and to rip them out must take some force.

Whatever the high pressure reading was, I took it before I was pulling the stump, with the cylinder all the way out. When the stump was comming out I was juggling the valve, camera, thoughts of decapitation.., so I didn't really get to see what the gauge said, other than trying for a couple seconds to keep it at 1000. (it stayed over that when I let off the lever) There may be some more left. The chains were really tight.
I guess with the frost heading in the stump pulling season is about over. I have about 4 trees leaning toward the shop that need to go, so I'm thinking about how to rig it up for that. Maybe use a straight trunk and multi-ropes as a lever to keep the tractor and cylinder out of the crash zone.

Does anyone have another source for relatively inexpensive cylinders?

When I checked baileynet.com yesterday they had one or some surplus like the OP is using, for the $149. Now they are out and the new cylinders are around $220 plus.

Now think that through carefully!!!!!!!!!! felling trees is a whole different can o worms!

Personally, I don't think your rig has the "throw" to use it for that purpose as, if you find you have to pull the tree a few more inches when you have maxed out the throw of the cylinder, you up a creek with not much paddle!

I have a BIG logging winch and I admit I have pulled the stunt you are speaking of.......

The differences are 1)I can rig the winch far enough away from the tree (and at a 90 degree angle from the pull, by chaining a slider to an anchor tree) so no matter what happens, the tree CANNOT fall on the tractor.

2) also, the "throw" is more than sufficient to pull the tree completely over once I start pulling on it. IE; all the cable can be winched in, say several 10's of yards of it, such that once I start pulling, the tree IS coming down, or at least I can lock the winch such that I don't worry about it going the other way.......

I had a "leaner" threatening the house....... It was a big s.o.b. and it had to come down, (but it was NOT leaning more than a few degrees) I wrapped a choker around the tree as high up as I could reach standing on a step ladder (for max leverage). I pulled the winch cable tight and locked the winch. At that point the tree was already wanting to go the direction of the pull.

I snuck up to it and cut a pretty good wedge.... then put more tension on the winch cable. I snuck up to it again and started cutting its back..... left a good hinge on it after watching the back side cut begin to pull apart. Nipped at it a bit more and then gave it all the winch had....... down like several ton of bricks.......

I don't recommend this level of stupidity at all, but I had limited choice and I got away with it. I doubt I would try it with your rig.

There is a thread here about a guy dropping a tree on his Kubota........ it wern't pretty!

I really can't see the reason to regulate the pressure. The resistance of the stump will dictate the pressure, and it may take it up to your relief pressure. If you should hear the relief kicking in, then just change your pull direction.

Agreed, ole Jake is "over" thinking the pressure thing. Unless the cylinder is rated less than the tractor's relief valve limit, just let er rip..... Tractor will tell ya when she is giving all she has........

that was just so I could use single chain, but after feeling how tight they were I was glad there were two of them on there. Don't have much experience snapping chains but I bet 1/2" grade 70 isn't where I want to start.
As for getting the trees to lean I'm going back and forth between trying to yank the stump halfway, or using a lever to increase my draw length, and going with like four 1" ropes up high. I know what you mean about 'almost' getting it to lean the right way. One is going to be tough. I'll save that one for last.

Remind me again....what was the purpose of PULLING these stumps? (those little ones could be ground out in about 10 minutes....or YOU could use your large grapple :laughing: )
