speaking of 3/4 out of a half ton. I head a buddy mention a hd half ton he had.. had the axles of like a 3/4 ton.. ie.. more bolts.

is this a commonly available option to get on a half ton truck?

soundguy

Ford currently has an option for the 2011 F-150's where you can order a heavy service package and it gives you seven bolt axles and higher ratings. It was in the Ford build calculator somewhere as I noticed it yesterday.

Quite honestly, I don't know why people order a three quarter ton truck over a one ton. By the time you add the extra weight, the payload often equals a half ton.

Because not everyone needs the one ton. I can actually get by with a half ton truck, I just tow enough that I prefer a 3/4 ton truck over a half ton for my towing use. Everything I tow can easily be handled by a half ton. So even if the one ton is only $600 more why spend it if "I" don't need that extra capacity and have never needed it to date? $600 will let me fuel up 5 times :confused2:

I just checked, its called the Heavy Duty Payload package. It increases the GVWR to 8200 pounds and it gives you high capacity 17" seven lug steel wheels, heavy duty shock absorbers, frame and 72 amp battery, upgraded springs, radiator and auxilary transmission oil cooler, 9.75" gear set, standard 3.73 axle, LT245/75R17E BSW All terrain tires.

F-350 SRW is the best keep secret out there. You can go from 10,000# GVWR to 11,500# GVWR for only $600. That is pennies when you are talking about a $40,000 truck. You get more payload, larger wheels for more ground clearance, and the ability to handle more pin/tongue weight. I can not tell you how many times I see people putting larger springs or air bags trying to make a 3/4 ton into a 1 ton.

My :2cents:

And in British Columbia there is less tax on one ton trucks and you actually pay less for it. Super Duty F250 is a rare truck here.

It just changed this past year up here in NH but previously any truck over 10k GVWR had to be inspected twice a year (vs once for passenger vehicles) and the registration was considerably more. The previous owner of my old F350 dump truck registered it for 9k just to beat the cost. I had to change it at the DMV back to 11k so I could actually load it up at the quarry. These new trucks are now pushing that 12k limit even with SRW. :confused2:

Also, insurance is more for 1-ton vs 3/4 so I wouldn't go for the 1-ton unless absolutely needed.

I pay more for my 1/2 ton here than I do for my 1 ton. My neighbor pays more for his Aviator than he does his 1 ton Dmax. His dump truck cost $7 per month versus $60 for his 1 ton so this is not true. Must be regional.
