The Little Extras Tips/Tricks

Hello

I am new to this forum and tractor ownership in general. However, I do have friends that have been kind enough to lend me their Kubota's from time to time. I just have never owned one myself. I am in the process of trying to make an informed buying decision as to model, dealer etc. I am currently looking at the 7800, 2910, 3000, and 3130.

There is all kinds of great information on this board and I thank all of you for sharing.

What I would really be interested in hearing about are the little extras that I might want to negotiate with my dealer, probably all kinds of things I have never heard of. Things like tires, stuff inside tires, etc., etc. Stuff beyond the big ticket hardware items.

I have heard of calcium in tires, is this something I want? I swear I heard a dealer talk about 'fluid filled tires'. What other things are useful, or things that aren't?

Welcome aboard. There are lots of very helpful folks on the board who are always willing to share their experiences. A couple of thoughts about what you might want to try and have included with your purchase. 50 hour service. It can be a bit spendy. Loaded rear tires. If you are going to get a FEL or operate on any hills this is probably a good thing to consider. A lot of dealers are now using windshield washer fluid instead of the old calcium mixture because it is not corresive and is environmentally more friendly. Some extra lynch pins, maybe a quick hitch if you plan on adding several 3 pt. attachments. I am sure there are lots of other suggestions that will be posted but those are my quick thoughts.

My brother fills his tires with old antifreeze. It seems to be a common thing around here. He checked the local truck company and the had just gave a farmer a barrel and sent the other off with chemical disposal folks (where they send old oil, etc).

Start reading. The archives in the forum are a wealth of information. Start by reading threads in the different areas. You will learn more about tractors and the various makes and models than you ever thought possible. If you put the time into reading what is in the threads you will go to the dealer as a fairly educated consumer. The book that the forum host sells is also a very good starting point for information. I have been reading for the last three months and am about to finalize a purchase of a B2910 with a boat load of implements. I am confident of the choices I am making because of the information in found in the forum. Invest the time and you will be very happy you did. Of course my wife refers to the TBN site as TRACTORPORN /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I am sure she will see the value in my time spent at TBN when the B2910 is unloaded in our yard. Good luck. Ben, welcome aboard. You are on the start of a journey many of us have followed and it can be fun and frustrating at the same time. Keep asking questions and read as many of the past posts you can, that will not take more than a year or two. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif As suggested I think that Muhammad's book is a great starting point.

If you can give us an idea of what you plan to use a tractor for it will help everyone give you more detail on tips, tricks and accessories. An example would be if you plan to finish mow most of the time, turf tires, no liquid ballast in the tires (ie; liquid filled tires, calcium in tires, loaded tires) and MMM (mid mount mower) vs. RFM (rear finish mower) would be topics brought up. If you want to plow fields most of the time the criteria for setting up a tractor would be much different.

I gotta tell ya, I have been getting the same flack from my wife about how much time I have been spending reading and posting on this forum. So tonight while I was reading your reply, she was in the room and I started laughing at your wifes description. Well of course I had to share it with my wife and she thinks it is a perfect fit!!! Has been chiding me with it eversince............well I'm glad to see that I am not the only one around here taking heat because I enjoy reading and posting in this forum.

There is so much great information as well as some humorous and just plain chit-chat on this forum. She just doesn't understand............

Yeah, my wife gives me a hard time about how much I surf this board (and another one for Chevy trucks). I just ask her if she'd rather I went to the chat rooms where everyone has, uh, other, less wholesome things in mind.

Chris, you sound like my long lost brother. I'm the same way. I visit 3 websites daily. This one, a hunting in PA site, and GM-trucks.com. Of course I stray and hit FOX News or Yahoo from time to time, but these are my addiction.

Told my wife the same thing you did. Smutty crap, or big boy toys. Take you pick! She was also fine with tractors, guns, and trucks.
