19970206 - Thursday - foundation drain

Took off from work. Dug dirt out from along front wall with shovel and installed corrugated pipe with slits for foundation drain. Used rocks temporary to hold pipe in place, then added gravel over pipe, then covered with Rosin paper.

Foundation guys had foam in wall forms to provide hole in porch wall for the drain pipe.

I clearly remember that process with my first house in 1979. I used perforated rigid sewer pipe. My gutter troughs also dumped into mine. I also dug mine down until the top of the pipe was at the elevation of the seam between the footing and the poured wall.

Never done this myself. It's interesting to see how it's done.

It's an evil necessity in my part of this great nation.

Now they have socks that go over the drain pipe to filter. I guess they still cover in gravel. All the gravel under the porch I used a wheel barrow and dumped it over the edge. I didn’t own a tractor and FEL yet. Didn’t have the money. Still got a little of this drain pipe sitting behind my shed.
I doubt this drain has seen any water. Most is under the porch slab, and the garage.

I put underground drains to carry most of the downspouts away from the house.

One thing I didn’t do that I should have, is put a floor drain in my utility room.

Passed Backfill inspection in AM, then excavation co back filled around foundation. They dumped more gravel over foundation drain first. I had work meetings to attend.

Curious to see how you did the porch. Do you fill it up with material and then build something over it? concrete?

It’s concrete. 7 ft deep, room enough to sit on a swing and people can walk by.

I know people who make a room under the porch slab, I didn’t.

My dad owned those type of concrete forms back in the 70's. It might even be the same brand. His were Con-Tech cast aluminum and possibly made in the Kansas City area and I believe now called Western Forms. You could paint the bricks a base coat and the then lightly go over the brick ridges with another color using a roller and light pressure. They were cast aluminum and still heavy. I couldn't carry an 8'x2' form until I was maybe 15.

Every now and then I read about a truck load of those forms getting stolen.
