How where you getting your lumber? Where you going to a store and buying it in person, or calling it in and having it delivered? I try to pick it up myself as much as possible so I know what I'm getting, but for big jobs, I'll have it delivered along with ten percent more that I expect to return because there is a point where it's worth paying extra for delivery.

Most lumber delivered by 84 lumber. My builder buddy ordered my first order (1st floor) then I ordered 2nd floor. He got me good price. When I needed more 2x4s later I picked them up.
In 1997 closest Home Depot was about an hour away, and the local Lowe’s was old and tiny. Now we have 2 Home Depot’s and 2 large Lowe’s in town. And 1 each same distance other direction.
84 lumber had good lumber. Not many bad pieces.
I did take off from my drawing and knew exactly how much of each size I needed. Optimized for things like headers, where I bought best length to reduce waste.

Finished the left end wall (needed it done to build left porch) triangle hole in this pic.

Installed overhang and header on right end porch roof.
Sheath porch to left end of house.

19970420 Sunday

Dug hole under footer and brought 4” septic pipe into basement. Septic installer had stopped at footer. Installed a clean out outside of back basement wall.
Installed 2/3 of shingles on back top, and installed upstairs skylight.
