Bird do you remember a couple of years ago when I posted "my wife's pot garden"?

If you look close you can see it weathering the storm.

If I do change my mind and stay home hopefully I'll get Leo on the phone (we got free long distance) and maybe I'll finally get harveylacey.com beyond the conceptual stage.

He's done so much and sent me the cd to modify it myself, just haven't got involved with it yet.

I need to do that though. Invariably when I'm talking to a potential customer I'll ask if they're online. They usually say yes and then it's a hassle giving them all the sites to visit for pictures of my work.

Yesterday I had a local call me from his office. He'd seen me working in his area and called for an estimate. I referred him to TBN after he answered to the affirmative about having a tractor. Hopefully he'll see some of the pictures and posts and decide I'm worth the difference in cost. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

But I do want to get these gates done today if possible. The twenty eighth and ninth we have a date to be in Marble Falls for a blacksmithing meeting and demo. If there's anyone out there who thinks they might be interested in blacksmithing and want to see a nationally recognized woman blacksmith doing her thing check out http://www.balconesforge.org/

They're a great group and the demos are always spectacular and informing. A couple of years ago at the iron in the hat auction I picked up a matched set of tongs that were made from antique square rebar. They were also the first project of a spry fella in his late seventies who'd finally got off his duff and started blacksmithing.

You're never too old to start and there's few things more rewarding than working steel while it's in a plastic state. It's a tad hot. But that's only to keep you from hugging it in your excitement. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Don't you know the guys up north are laughing their backsides off at us? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif There were two deer at my feeder this morning, but they were gone by the time I got my camera. The feeder is in this picture, but it's kinda hard to see. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

...and tomorrow the forecast is for 57º. Texas, home to very, very short winters. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Frank, what I've heard on the news so far is 3 to 5" this time. We probably had 2 to 3" here. Best I can remember, we'll see a few snowflakes in the air once or twice a year, but may only have an accumulation on the ground once every 3 to 5 years or more. This morning, when the pictures were made the temperature was 31 and I think it got up to 35 today, so it's nearly all gone. I can only remember 3 or 4 times in the last 40 years that we had enough snow and cold enough temperatures for it to stay on the ground more than a couple of days. What has been worse are the ice storms; i.e., freezing rain and sleet, but we've only had bad ones of those 3 times that I can think of in the last 30 years (may have been some others not too bad that I've forgotten). The last one I can think was was around Christmas/New Years 1989/90, when I believe the official temperature got down to -1F and the high temperatures stayed below freezing for a few days. We expect several days of temperatures in the 20s each winter, but sometimes make the whole winter without it getting below 20.

BIRD: DOES THAT AMT OF SNOW SNARL EVERTHING UP. a friend of mine lives in north carolina, and swears 3 inches of snow brings them to a standstill. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Frank, it's been my experience that if it's just snow, especially if it's as warm as it was yesterday when we were getting the snow (31F), it's not much of a problem; traffic keeps it beat off the roads, although the newspaper this morning did say there were a number of fender benders, delayed flights at D-FW airport, and some power outages. However, if we have the freezing rain and ice, it's a real circus. It took me 3 hours to get to work one morning (22 miles) because I had to stop so many times to help push other vehicles out of the way before I could get through. So a good ice storm can just about bring everything around here to a halt, but usually doesn't last more than a day or two. You know we have no snow removal equipment in this area (I think D-FW airport got some a few years ago); but they do spread sand with a small amount of salt mixed in anytime we have ice on the roads.

I think in the nearly 25 years I was on the police department, I drove a police car with tire chains 4 or 5 days.

That's OK. In the 25+ years that I've beeen driving, I've never driven a vehicle other than a lawn tractor with chains. And we get snow. Use to get lots of snow, but not so much anymore. Heck, we don't even use snow tires anymore. All season radials work just fine. I haven't seen tire chains on a vehicle since I was a kid.

Watched my 11 year old play basketball today. She comitted her first foul of the season today. They won by 4. Fun to watch the girls play. I think they play more like a team than the boys. No individual standouts, real team effort and good coaching.

Went fishing again today... caught lots of little ones. Ice was an honest foot thick. Temps were around 15. Beautiful, sunny day. Didn't even need gloves. It's about 6 right now. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

David, you have to remember that I started on the police department before we had radial tires (or power steering, power brakes, disk brakes, air-conditioning, and automatic transmissions). /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif We had black Ford sedans with the 289 V-8s, 3 on the tree (hey, we thought it was great that they finally had a synchromesh first gear), an electric siren that wound down slowly (unless you stuck the corner or your call book in it to stop it), two-channel radios, and two little round truck turn signals mounted on the roof for red lights. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
