Too much tractor? Never. A big tractor can always do a small job but not the other way around. Enjoy big.

If you are working with just one tractor the Mx5800 is about the right size, however I somewhat disagree with the above quote. I suggest you consider a second smaller "chore" tractor as it makes life much easier, but a larger M size machine seems the right size for your main machine.

That is true. I was working on the premise of affordability and only having one tractor.

I'm far from an expert but when i was looking for a tractor i was told get the biggest one you can afford. I was also told that there is never such a thing a to much tractor, just to much a tractor can do. I have a 40 hp tractor for a little over 2.5 acres. A little bigger than i wanted but on most days I'm glad a have it. It is a beast for my projects and lifts everything i need it to. Some days its a little much but i love it. Some days i even wish i had gone bigger but that's just me being me. A friend of mine has a M5140 for 11 acres.

Is there such a thing? I did zero in on an MX5800. See previous post with pics of the land... its 24 acres of steep hills completely wooded with about 2 to 3000 foot of dirt road to maintain. I'll have a lot of trees/brush to deal with as will the occasional stump. Lots of large flat rocks I'll use for landscaping to move around.
So... I've not taken delivery but its ordered. In this time and reading several posts I got to wondering did I get too much tractor? Plenty on here saying how much they love their BX, L3301, L2501, etc... and I'm over here like dang... I coulda got 2 2501's for what I'm paying for this MX.
Am I going crazy?

Nah... you're OK. I have an MX 5100 on 94 acres of very hilly and wooded Blue Ridge Mountain land. I say 94, but probably can get my MX to only half. Doesn't matter, you need a big tractor for it. I probably could get enough out of my L3301, but I prefer the MX. One word of advice... BUY THE WHEEL WEIGHTS FOR THE REARS. Loaded tires aren't enough on these tractors, they are way too light in the rear without weights.

Well. I did get the tires filled. But prob wont operate without at least the box blade and I got the heaviest biggest one.

Yep, I have the tires on my L5740HSTC filled, always have a minimum 1000 implement on the 3PH and still added wheel weights. Much better traction.

We have the MX5800 and really like it. Several quick thoughts: First, I agree with the posters above about ballast on the rear of the MX. We have the rear wheels filled and also usually keep a 1200+ ballast box on. 2d, if you will be operating on any hills, consider having your rear wheels set to the widest position. We did and like the stability. 3d, we have owned several different hp tractors--40, 31, 54, 38 and now 58. We sold the 38 hp and bought the 58 hp specifically to get more power. Congrats on your tractor. You will no doubt enjoy it.

Hey - - there are times I wish I had a different size tractor. Weaving around, among & between my ancient Ponderosa pines - like to have a B-series Kubota. Up on the high pasture with my disk harrow - wish I had a 250 hp tractor and appropriately sized disk harrow.

My M6040 is about the best compromise - size & power wise - that I could find. "A man has got to recognize his limitations"

There has ALWAYS been another answer to the dilemma you pose....

MX5800 will be perfect on your property. Similar size to my fathers 3930, which can get almost anywhere and is capable of most tasks.
Sub compacts are very useful, perfect on my 5 acres....but would only do you good as a backup in my experience.

We have 50 acres of hilly, wooded land and I sold my L4630 because I wanted more weight and HP for logging and general tractor work.
The M6040 only has maybe 10 more hp than the L but it weighs close to a ton more which is really a plus when moving big logs and the like.
