Anyone have a good engine for a 3200? mine seems to have spun its bearings, im afraid it was my fault. I purchased it from a gov auction and spun the starter to raise the bed. Come to find out that the engine has no oil in it when i could get to it :(

Got the Mitsubishi 3-cylinder gas engine? Or one of the diesels?

Either way, new bearing shells should be available for a rebuild. Camshaft may be scored, too.

3 cylinder gas. It think its the Mitsubishi 3g83? yea ive seen the bearings on ebay for like 200. the camshaft would be hard to repair for me. Has anyone swapped in a diesel in place of the gas? ive got a kubota d722 laying around that i was thinking of installing.

Toro Tim,
Just depends on just how good you are at fab work!
I would seriously consider buying one with the Mitsubishi diesel engine already in it, and using yours for parts or selling it to recoup some of the money. If it has a good carb on it, they bring a pretty penny. Coming from a gov auction, it has probably sat up long enough to need rebuilding. Can it be done, absolutely, but it requires some definite "outside the box" thinking. It actually might be easier to convert it to an air cooled engine like the newer ones have.
I need a governor and a carb for the 3 cylinder Mitsubishi, so if you are anywhere in the south, or midwest, I might be interested if you part it out. Actually for those small parts, UPS would probably work from anywhere.
Is yours an open station or a cab? Does it have any optional equipment, like a pto, generator, scissor lift or such?

BTW, there is an engine on Facebook marketplace up in the midwest. Same guy has a Toro without an engine in it, and my TN buddy says that engine isn't the same engine as the Toro uses (which is why he didn't put it in the chassis?) Selling price was about $1150 last time I looked at it. Reason for mentioning this, is I don't want you to make the same mistake that seller made.
I can put you in touch with the TN guy who said it won't work if you need to know.
For that kind of money, you might find a whole vehicle with a good engine but bad carb or a bad transmission. (I have bought both at around that price)
TN guy bought a tank sprayer unit missing the tranny and carb for about $200 and I bought a good running cab unit with bed and DOORS for about $2k. Together we bought a complete unit that ran when gas was sprayed in carb, for about $400.
Bottom line, they are out there.
As far as your original engine, why do you think the bearings are bad? No longer than it takes to run a bed up using the starter, the residual oil in the bearings would probably keep it from tearing them up. They run for several seconds every time you go to start them without any oil pressure.
I would seriously go thru the hassle of getting it running before I tore into a motor or before I gave up on it.

...and rebuilding the engine, if necessary, is gonna be easier that trying to adapt a different engine to the existing clutch and transmission.

open cab, no optional equipment on it unfortunately. I tried to buy another one (3000hr 4x4 diesel) yesterday but it sold for almost 2k which i though was a bit too much considering they didnt say if it ran well. they did say it was missing some axle parts it think. Id really like to get mine going, it would be useful to have a mini dump truck on the farm, id probably use it to shuttle bales off the field when we pick up grass. Ill let you know if i part the engine out on mine, but i think ill tear into it first to see how bad the damage is. If its just a matter of some main bearings then that should be an manageable fix.

I messed with starting it before I read about raising the bed.Probably turned it over for about 2 min total and I know it didnt make noises when i started. oh mine will run on starting fluid but it makes a nice squeak every so often. It really sounds like the main bearing is gone. Normally I think things thru but that day I replaced intelligence with an eagerness to fire it up. I am now smarter about checking fluids and one project deeper haha

fair point, i just read that the guys said it only had but 4 bolts on the housing, thought it might be quick to bolt another engine to it

Yeah, I posted about there being only 4 bolts that hold engine to bellhousing. Fabricating an adapter will be a lot of work.

Note that you can lift the bed without starting the engine. Crank the engine with the starter (pull the coil wire first) and the bed lever actuated. You can remove the plugs to make it even easier.

I was thinking that was what he did to burn the engine up, due to it not having oil in the engine. Plus he also spun it over trying to start it which added to the amount of wear on the bearings.

yep thats my thought, kind of a shame as the whole unit only has but 1600hrs which reading thru the thread is pretty low.

Toro_tim,
Where are you located? That makes a huge difference when discussing replacement engines. I have a Toro Workman out back with tank/sprayer and no transmission or carb that is slated to go to TN as a motor donor. It and the other parts Toro (complete unit) will eventually go to TN and the hydraulics will come back to Florida reincarnated in a Toro Commercial Cab unit with a heater.
These Toro's pop up occasionally in the South, but travel time and fuel costs tend to make them more expensive than I am willing to pay, due to already having more of them than my Bride is comfortable with!

I would think that an industrial setting would be a good place to find them also, due to the capacity of the bed. The scissor lift would also be a good choice for that same reason, but since there are so few of them around, maybe golf courses win out!

I just thought I would update this post as far as my end of it. I sold the red cab Toro with the aluminum bed to my buddy in TN. The yellow/white cabbed Toro Industrial 3210 is now here, and is great. We are still looking for windshield wiper arms, because the original motor was bad and a replacement motor has a different size output shaft. So...no wipers for now. The cylinders for the dump bed have been installed, now making it a fully dump bed unit. Along with that, the hydraulic pump had to be changed because power steering only uses a smaller pump. Add into that that cable and lever getting installed under the cab to make it all work was done also.
This unit did not have hi-low differential, nor locking differential options, but upon investigation of the differential unit, it appeared to have them inside the gearbox, just never hooked up. Moving the cables and levers from the parts unit to the 3210 and now it has hi-low and locking differential. Quite an improvement when you need to pull something heavy or haul a heavy load.
I still need to source a spare propane tank to allow me to swap them out as they run out. We took it for a ride over thru the streets behind my property and ran out of fuel. Calling the Wife to come get us and grabbing a spare tank wasn't the way we planned the day. Both tanks are out of date, so local filling station won't fill them.
Couple weeks ago I found a 4x4 Toro literally on my way home, about 30 miles from Jax. I sent a message to stop by and look at it, but then realized it was located in Stuart not Starke. Stuart being 260 miles further south on the east coast. So I straightened out that with the seller, but she wouldn't take a non-refundable deposit to hold it till I got there, and the next weekend was my Bride's birthday. Wife agreed to give up her birthday plans to go after it, and seller agreed to hold it till 1pm Saturday. We left home at 7am, got up on the bypass and noticed the aftermarket TPMS system was saying one of my front wheels was getting hotter by the minute. I determined a sticking brake caliper, so turned around and went home. Called a buddy who hooked up his trailer to his truck while i was coming after it. We went south, got there at 1:30 and bought it. Only took a couple hours to load it, non running, flat tires, been sitting for several years in the back corner of a very large shop. The trailer didn't have a winch on it like mine does, so I had to use a pair of comalongs to load it.
Got it back home, and pulled it around to the back using the 3210 and haven't had time to even look at it. We are still trying to decide if the 4x4 unit will go to TN or stay in Florida.

My 3200 is for sale locally (San Jose), but no interest at $4500. I was driving it around yesterday and the master cylinder started leaking, so I will have to fix that. It was parked for a few months, but started up immediately.

There is another 3200 for sale locally, with engine and shifter problems, for $1500, plus a long-time 4x4 listing in the central valley, for $6K, with trans problems.

Last month, I was at the Campbell Library, and there was a city grounds worker there, driving a 20yo 2WD Workman Diesel. It had about 5000hr on it. It was surprisingly quiet. The muffler had been replaced recently.

My 3210 had a dry master cylinder reservoir when it was picked up. It is located behind the heater core, so isn't readily accessible. I probably need to check that more often! The previous owner had been using the parking brake to stop it. Considering they had the governor disconnected, the motor would turn till it didn't have the horsepower to go any faster. Top speed was about 35mph, which is a lot more than it is supposed to go! When my friend went to unload it on his hilltop, there were no brakes to stop it. I ran into a similar issue with one that I picked up in Punta Gorda, that ran but no brakes. That owner failed to mention that the throttle cable was bound up and when you shifted into gear, it would accelerate the engine. i went to back off my Big Tex trailer and it revved up after I let the clutch out. With no brakes, that was a ride despite pushing the clutch pedal back in!

I just ran the Toro Workman 3210 down the road with my GPS activated and it said I was doing 19 mph wide open. Don't know if that is what they are supposed to do, never heard what top speed is supposed to be.

I just realized that the rear tires are solid tires, and are quite a bit smaller in diameter than what comes on it normally. These solid tires were an option, but I am sure that it slows them down due to circumference.

My TN buddy just talked to a gentleman who rebuilds the 3 cylinder Mitsubishi engines on a regular basis. Do I need to put the two of you in touch with each other so you can get introduced to the rebuilder?
My TN buddy wouldn't be impressed with someone who just says they can rebuild one, there was a good amount of conversation before he came to that conclusion.
