Tractor gun, what do you guys think?

.410 3" or 45 LC. Looks like it's no fun to shoot. Would be handy to dispatch rats and snakes off the tractor when bush hogging.

Too bad photobucket doesn't keep the image for us.

I have a .410 double barrel shotgun, that I realy like. Not as handy as the TC (which I plan to get someday), but still nice gun.

So then what would it be considered? I hunt deer with mine and it is perfectly legal because the State of Michigan defines it as a shotgun, not a rifle. Where I live, you can not use a rifle to hunt, just a shotgun. Hmmm.......

WB

I have one, and it was sold as a slug gun. Rifled barrel, 12 ga. The WI laws allow it as a shotgun. Great accuracy at 100 yds. As good as my .308 rifles.

(but doesn't shoot turkey loads worth a darn. made that mistake this turkey season, and just muffled up the feathers at 15 yards. I know....dumb move, but grabbed it because it had a low powered scope on it. )

I use a Santa Cruz gun bracket system on the ROPS to hold an FN SLP 12 guage automatic shotgun - 18-inch barrel, 6 shot magazine, ghost ring rear sight with a front ramped site. The SLP uses Invector choke tubes and for general field use I use a modified choke with #4 birdshot. For home defense I change the choke to a cylinder bore and load the gun with #1 buckshot and Winchester PDX-1 rounds that include a 1 ounce rifled slug + three 00 buckshot.

For carry arms I either use a S&W stainless 44 special "N" frame with a "J" frame drop butt handle with a 2-inch barrel, or a custom stainless .45 Detonics Combat Master (6.875 inches long) with Millet sights and a Safari Arms beaver tail on the grip. I custom ported the gun through the slide and barrel when I had access to an EDM. You could port the Detonics instead of using a dump chamber because the Detonics does not use a barrel bushing to lock the slide on the barrel, instead the barrel is flared at the end and the slide locks up on the flared barrel.

I carry the .44 in a custom belt holster made by El Paso Saddlery, and the Detonics in a nearly 30 year old Bianchi #13 holster that can be used either as a belt holster or shoulder holster.

There was a similar rifle made a century ago. If I recall correctly, it was a Buntline Special.

The Buntline Special was a weapon allegedly used by Wyatt Earp. There was a writer Edward Zane Carroll Judson who wrote western fiction stories under the pseudonym of "Ned Buntline." As part of one of his stories, he alledgedly gave Wyatt Earp a gun chambered for .45 Colt (aka - "long Colt" cartridge) revolver with a 16-inch barrel the - "Buntline Special." None of that is true. There were 31 pistols in the serial number range 28,800 to 28,830 made by Colt in 1876 in .45 Colt caliber with 16-inch barrels - coincidently, the year Ned Buntline was writing his story.

Later this style of gun was used for prop guns in Western movies and had a short stock that could clip onto the revolver handle to make it into a small carbine style rifle.

There have been a number of carbine style rifles made with revolving cylinders instead of tube magazines. However, they are not a true "Buntline Special."

An automatic is not the best choice since sometimes it is a "one and done" gun unless it is shoulder mounted. The resistance of the shoulder allows the recoil/ejection mechanism to work. No shooting from the hip or out of position.

The highway patrol uses a pump for just this reason.

If you and others are open to and interested in some good valid information about the Taurus Judge ammunition written by others, please read these articles:

Handloader Magazine, June 2010, by Dave Scovill, on page 8 thru page 11 states the Federal Personal Defense .410 ammunition in 2.5 inch shells; #4 shot = 835fps; 000 buck = 892fps.

Guns & Ammo, June 2010, by Dick Metcalf, on page 55 thru page 57 states the Winchester PDX1 .410 ammunition in 2.5 inch shells; 3 Defense Disc projectiles with 12 BB shot = 752fps, and the 3 disc penetration is about 10.5 inches, a long with the 12 BB shot penetration is about 5.5 inches both in 10% ballistic gelatin (5 rounds of this ammunition has 15 Defense Disc projectiles and also 60 BB shot is a lot better then 5 rounds of .22 long rifle 40 grain ammunition inside of a house).

I know you have had a bad experience with your Judge regarding ammunition choices, but you were never specfic as to the exact ammunition you were shooting and getting 450 to 500fps readings?

I hope this information can give you and others some good specific information on the Judge ammunition that is available for it. :D :D :D KC

B.T.W. I have been collecting for about 50 years and I know there are many types of different choices for firearms and what goes a long with the firearm choice are many, many, and many more choices of different types of ammunition. You might say making these choices can result in the Good, the Bad, and also the Ugly.

yes, you are right.

Holy cow, real wilderness. I assume we are talking Grizzly? You have visuals of mountain lion? That's really cool but I can see why you'd want to carry.

Hey bstrom, we had a visual on two mountain lions last night about 9pm . They were about ten feet from our back deck and walking towards our neighbors. I called our neighbor to warn them, and while I was on the phone, both lions showed up walking on the neighbors driveway . I will try to load a picture ? Know we are just wondering when we will see a grizzly on our property :D. KC
