Where/how do you guys carry when on the tractor?

I plan to carry my .45 auto (Kimber Ultra Carry II in stainless, 3" barrel:licking::thumbsup::D) for rattlesnakes (lots em where we live) and ratus fatus maximi.

Is there a preferred method in terms of safety - holstered on your body, or holstered/stowed on the tractor? I am a practiced shooter and can draw, rack, and aim very quickly.

Wow, Snapper Head! You're a much better shot than I'll ever be...or willing to get closer to rattlers then I am. Hitting a (possibly moving) snake with a 3" barrel pistol at ten feet or more (that's about as close as you'll see me get to a rattle snake/copperhead/etc) would be a real feat for me.

Lost, It looks like you need one of those Calico 100 round 9mm pistols ! :D
Or maybe a leftover Tec-9 ?

How about a super comanche. I think they are about $169. They are a knock-off contender pistol in .45lc/410

For snakes the FEL does a fine job. Even if it is full of something, a backdragged snake is a good snake...

For anything else a .38

DDog,

I hear you on that. I'm pretty accurate, and practice a great deal. I reckon I'll get to see how good I can pop a rattler from the seat:D

Lost - I don't compete, but I do practice a lot. Snakes don't give me the heebie jeebies, so getting close is no big deal. Plus, I'll be up on the tractor.

The 3" barrel takes getting used to, but if you spend a fair bit of time working with it and learning how the recoil assimilates into your particular hand and arm set, then you can be as accurate with it as with a 5" barrel.

A shotgun would be a better tool in the case of varmint blasting from the tractor, but stowing the thing, even a sawed off, would seem to be a pain.

I didn't consider using the loader. But, blasting it would be more fun:D

My wife killed a big rattle snake in our back yard with my Sig 220 .45 ACP, she doesn't like or need a shotgun.

I carried a Glock 23 and 27 when I worked for a living in a Blackhawk Serpa holster, now a S&W 638 goes in my pants pocket, not very fast, but handy.

TripleR - remind me not to walk through your back yard:D

I reckon carrying the pistol on my person while on the tractor would be the best method, and covered up also so as to keep dirt & dust out. Then again, I might build a glove box of some sort that will be within easy reach.
