Tractor towing 101 - how to load and secure?

THat sucks. Glad I live in the rural midwest state of Ohio

+2. Glad I live in Texas. And East Texas, at that. If you're using ANY tie-down method out on our county roads, you are probably in the minority, ha! :D

I wuz gonna say that JasG's recommendation is not required, but then I read the rest of it. Truth is it is not required, but if you live in a state run by government loving types (sorry about the politics..) then you will probably get hosed at some point. That is sad, IMHO.

I secure mine with 4 chains. 2 connected to the grill guard, which is very sturdy. 2 connected to a shackle in the drawbar (2 independent chains). I use ratchet binders and I have never had the tractor move a mm. I probably do not have much tractor moving in my future, but I will continue in this vein, and will fight any charges I might get tha contradict logic (though I doubt I would get any here)

Reviving this older thread while looking for info for my next trip
Go to the massey ferguson vintage classic forum and go to page 2 Look for massey 65 field find by porkchopsmnn. Go to page three of this thread post #28 and read from there. This will be give good and bad examples how to haul a tractor. Be Safe.

Definitely don't do that at home!

I drive on until my ball sinks about 4" which is 800 on the tongue. Chain front frame to trailer d rings in an "x", back tractor up until 5/16" 70 chains are tight, hook 2 more to rear d rings / drawbar support, and ratchet bind rear. 2 more 1/4 gr 43 from toplink boss to stake pocket, lever bind, duct tape binder handles. Pull up 800lb load bars on trailer and it's good.
I have no easy access to a scale until I get on the road for a ways.
What I've been doing is calculating the tongue weight w/ a scale some boards and pipes as shown on

at etrailer. But I'm thinking of substituting triangular pieces of wood for the pipes.

This is about what I plan on doing, plus straps over the FEL.
Question:
Does anyone use wheel chocks for the equipment ON the trailer?

I tie down 4 points to the main frame or axle of the tractor with chains and binders, then each attachment gets its own tie downs [usually just pull straps but by Michigan law it needs to be done]. Once the LEO see the chains and tie downs I don't get a second look. I hold a CDL so they don't go as easy on us as a normal stop would be. As far as tong weight, the more the better. So it depends on the vehicle I am pulling with. The f150 usually gets between 600 and 1k and the F250 up to 2k depending on what I am pulling. So the load gets loaded however I need to to get the proper tong weight. So no rules just whatever is needed to make a safe haul. CJ
