Trailer big enough for 50HP tractor? Quick sanity check

That trailer would haul a 90 HP cab tractor and a big round baler with room to spare.......

No one needs a trailer designed to haul big tractors, backhoes, or even a small dozer to limp around a 50HP tractor a few times per year.

Unless DOT stops you for not having proper brakes. Not if a car or kid blows a stopsign or driveway and you can't stop because you don't have brakes. Uncontrollable sway due to overloaded tires or improperly biased load weight. There are a few good reasons to have a safe trailer besides reducing the risk of you killing someone or yourself. I have had friends drive trailers that had inadequate brakes that regretted that move. No dead friends but underwear changes required. In my state you have to have brakes on a trailer over 2,000 pounds.

A 40 horsepower tractor may not mean much. A 40 hp tractor could weigh 3,500 pounds and another could weigh 5,800 pounds without implements. That DK55 weighs about 5,000 before implements. You could add another ton in implements depending on what you are carrying.

My little JD870 with a loader and brush cutter is a huge pain to load on a 16 foot trailer tag along. Not so bad when the pulverizer is attached. For me it is not a question of weight as much as just plain fitting and getting bias correct.

Are you kidding? He needs a Kenworth and a lowboy....

I have an 18' 10K trailer which means I can load it up to 7,500 pounds. You could squeeze a DK55 on it as long as you don't want to bring any implements. Mine was full with a ck27 and 5' brush hog.

I am fortunate that i have a 28' gooseneck when I want to move big/ heavy stuff. Last year you could get a 24' Delta for around $4500. Not cheap but not bad either. I use the GN a lot but it is big.

What would that big two axle trailer with duals cost? $10K+?

Thing probably weighs more than the tractor...... weekend warriors simply don't need 100K tow rigs.

IronHog - I think that was sarcasm :)

BTW, if you want to see what my setup looks like, it's in my avatar. The bucket is at the rear end of the trailer. Balances good and pulls very nicely, even at freeway speeds. More length would be great as 16' is short for this, but for my current needs, it works.

Your trailer looks like something I we would use to move a small tractor.

I grew up on a full time cattle farm.... according to TBN we should have died multiple fiery deaths with the trailers we moved/move big loads on......

I know what you mean. Some of these guys would have a stroke if they knew the gross weight that I routinely load my 27' dual tandem gooseneck to and pull it behind a 3/4 ton pickup.

I have a 50 hp Farmtrac 60 with loaded 14.9-28" ag tires/fel and a 6' mower that rides on a new 10k GVWR bumper pull 18' dovetail with tandam 5200 lbs axles/10 ply rated tires. The trailer weighs 2460 lbs unladin.
With 1000-1050 lbs on the truck the load on the trailers axles is around 9500 lbs depending on the tractors loaction.
The bucket sits on the trailers deck and the mowers tail wheel hangs over about 24". In my state legal overhang is 2/3 of the distance from the aft trailer axle to the rear most part of the trailer.
I've pulled out to 250 miles a few times working on a lease. No issues

Previous trailer was a flat deck 16' 7k GVWR (two 3500 lb axles). It was severally overloaded. After one 75 mile trip I sold it and got the correct trailer. Much better towing especially with 10400 lbs of trailer brakes vs 7000 lbs on the old trailer.

I should have included a picture of the trailer w/ my B7610 on it.

As you can see the B7610 leaves it a lot of room.

Eh, I see where people are coming from. Many folks on here are novices (like myself, frankly), so it is better to push people towards the correct equipment the first time, if they have the choice. That means one less thing for a newbie to screw up. With my setup, if you load it the other way around (pointing forward) there is nowhere near enough tongue weight. If you don't know that, you could get into trouble. With an 18' or even better a 20' trailer, you would have room to adjust to get it right and that risk would go away. I wish I had gotten a longer one, but I knew nothing when I did it. Now that I know how it behaves, it works fine for my needs.

Like the OP - Unless he is going to be hauling it a ton, he should be fine as is, if he has any level of experience (like it appears he does). But if something changes like he is doing it all the time or wants to haul with a 6-7' bushhog on the 3pt, then he probably needs to upsize. He's fine on weight capacity, just needs more length.
