Right after I purchased my tractor (last fall), I bought a couple of 5 gallon containers as well as two 15 gallon ones for fuel. The smaller containers worked well over the winter since we didn't get too much snow. Now that spring has arrived, I am using more fuel and thought I'd start using the 15 gallon containers in order to reduce the trips to the filling station. However, it occurred to me that a 15 gallon container of diesel fuel would weigh about 110 pounds, just a little too much to lift down from the back of the pickup, even though the containers have handle on the top. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif Any recommendations?

Well, you can pump it...or rig a system up like Harv did. His system uses pulleys and such to take the weight. About all he does is direct the flow.
That thread is in this forum somewhere...

You have a loader on your tractor, don't you? Lay the container on it's side and roll it into the bucket. Just watch the tooth bar! Most containers can take a lot of abuse. I've unloaded 55 gallon drums by laying them down and kicking them off the back of the truck. I realize thats not the recommended method but sometimes you got to do what you got to do.

Stick with the 5 gallon containers. 5 gallons must last 10hrs on your TC25. Are you really getting that much seat time?

I've used 2 5 gallon diesel cans for years with my L3710 which burns slightly less than a gallon an hour. The fuel is always fresh and it's conditioned in the winter at the pump.

I get my fuel at the local gas station 55 gallons at a time. I just tip the drum on its side and roll it in the bucket of the FEL. A little bit leaks out, probably less than a pint.

Not if you tighten the bungs. Of course it depends on how rusty and dented up the fittings are, also. If it leaks a little, work faster! :)

Actually, Roy, I never got around to rigging the pulleys, but you're probably remembering this picture I posted a while back. I just hang it on a sling hook attached to the eves of the shop.

I use a couple of yellow 6-gallon cans that actually have "Diesel" embossed on the sides. That's about as much as I care to hoist by hand, and when I get tired of that I'll figure out something else. That's where the real fun is anyway.

If you have a set of forks you can strap it to a skid.

You don't need to fill them full. I wanted a single 55 gallon barrel of diesel but instead picked up two barrels and filled them each with 25 gallons of OR diesel. 25 gallons in a steel barrel is light enough to work with and tip up from laying down on its side. I then pumped one barrel into the other with my 11$ harbor freight rotary pump, then moved the pump to the full barrel. I will add 25 gallons when I think the barrel is getting down. I saved 40 cents per gallon and the barrel is always ready for me to make a withdrawl.

Thanks, but I got my answer 4 years ago.

But there have been so many advances in fuel delivery systems in the past 4 years. I bet that string attached to the garage door (a few posts back) has been upgraded to a rope.

Yep, you could also go get two 2 by 6 laminated planks, and wheel'em up and down with your hand Dolly.

Good! Because 4 years is a long time to drive around with containers of diesel in your pickup!

Instead of fooling around with 2 55 gallon drums why not go with 1 and have the distribution fill it for you when they are in your area?

I have 1 or 2 distributors and a bulk plant here that will top off my drum whenever they are making deliveries in my area.
