I'll be the lazy guy /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

It is amazing what you can come up with out of shear desperation or extreme laziness. Maybe another word for this is American igenuity.

A lug night fit perfect!! Lucky I found it in my collection of spare nuts and bolts. Does everyone have a coffee can full of these too? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I welded it to a piece of scrap half in rebar, then welded a piece of half inch pipe into a piece of 3/4 inch pipe and welded that into a piece of 1 1/2 inch pipe. Since there was a pretty big gap to the last pipe, I welding on some pieces of 3/8 flat stock. This created a heavy slide hammer.

Then I welded on a piece of half inch flat stock to then end to slam the hammer into.

Here is the nozzle that split on me. The remaining piece is still in the head.

Can I knock it out whith a hammer and punch? I don't plan on using it again, so it doesn't matter if I destroy it, but I don't want to ruin the cylinder head.

Yea, you should be able to knock it through the hole.. More than likely the plug was shorted or overheated( oops, meant the glow plug, but the injector would be similar ) and caused it to mushroom inside the combustion chamber.. This isnt too rare.. So, with the head off(or while its on, before you take it off with the piston down) knock it through.. You can retreive the tip later.. I just wouldnt rotate the crank with the loose peice in there..

After the nozzles were out, it was pretty simple to take off the head bolts. There are lifting hooks already on the head, so that was easy too.

The attachement on the backhoe worked perfectly!!!

Thanks Greg,

I have it sitting on the floor right now on a couple of blocks.

Would you do a valve job on the engine while it's apart?

Here's what caused my problems. It's the second compression ring that's in pieces. It wore the groove for the ring wide and then the cylinder wall has a massive amount of taper!!

All the pistons have the same coloration on them, but none have cracked rings.

Number five cylinder has more taper than the otehrs, but not even close to number six.

I need to find a cylinder puller now and figure out how to pull the sleeves. Any tips????

Thanks,
Eddie

Well Eddie,

Personally, I would recommend a valve job.. Kind of cheap assurance that you wont have a valve issue later.. Tell them NOT to machine the head though.. Diesels dont like that, it changes the shape of the combustion chamber and valve protrusion..

As for the taper........ Hard call..... If I had it tore down this far and it was my free labor and money going into it, I would ask myself if I wanted to do it again.. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif... So, will there be an issue if you dont? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif...dont know.... If you have that much taper and wear, it had to come from some kind of abrasive, in my mind that means at some point in life the air cleaner was neglected...So,all of the rings and cyl walls are worn..If you were able to do a compression test, it might have answered a few questions... Right now, my gut would say that you should find out how much more it would cost to do them all vs do it again next time... Sorry.....But I guess it all depends on how long you plan to keep it..

I thought this was going to be a quick fix and not an in frame overhaul. You pulled all the injectors, all the pistons, and more?

I wonder if you couldn't just replace the one set of rings and put everything back together. Perhaps even the injectors were all fine except for the one that split. Maybe a light hone and rering all pistons since they're out.

I sure like your slide hammer.

Youch! That piston looks like someone used too much ether starting fluid. That stuff works like a charm, but can toast an engine quick!

The taper was probably caused by ring parts rubbing on the cylinder. You can just replace the bad one and go, or the worst two. No real need to do them all. I have not done this personally, but have been told that welding a bead on the sleeve top to bottom in several areas will allow it to come out pretty easy. I HAVE done it a lot on press fit bushings and it does work for that.

I would have a valve job done on the head while out. Diesels like a good tight cylinder.

Great job keeping us informed!

Eddie, You mentioned the radiator mess, If the radiator is still good which I assume it is , I would take a pressure washer to it with a wide spray after soaking it with a degreaser..

I would also do the valve job while the head is off, cheap insurance... and shouldn't be too expensive...

Obviously you will be sleeving this block (with a bad taper), I have'nt done that in my travels but , I have had to freeze a piece of steel and heat another to get them to fit together ... A stout block of Oak or other hardwood and a big hammer ( I really feel bad for you on this one) It won't be fun...Awh Dude /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
