you are a pretty good welder,,[just looked at two,,up 7018 and overhead 6011 believe it was],,,,can't do any better up than that with 7018,,,,the overhead,,,to much gap,,and or not enough land,,etc,,,,you got to experiment with these gaps and such,,,,I always used about 1/16 gap and 1/16 land,,thats in inches,,,,cause I was a down hill welder,,down hill you don't gap it very wide,,you butt that rod up against bevel and push it in,[rod tip is actually touching steel,,or there abouts],,,what I'm saying to you is,,,vary your gap,,,experiment,,,,vary your land,,experiment,,,once you put root in,,you are done on backside,,its got to be 100 percent,,,if you take plates down and grind off root stick through,[penatration],,than you shouldn't have to grind off much more than flush to get to plain shiny metal,,if you can't do that,,than you need to change your set up,,,whip and pause will leave you with voids in root sometimes,,not acceptable to code,,,,thingy

HUH ?

I think you might be talking english but not sure ?

Land is a flat area on bevel edges,,more,,harder it is to get penatration,,,less easier it is,you can get no penatration or burn holes if you don't get it right,,,this is all in conjuntion with root gap,,,amps,,what size rod,,,,etc,,much more to it than it might appear,,but bet the man who made them welds,,knew what I was saying?,,,,,thingy

The ones that are listed as OH are overhead.

Nice. You were using gas on the wire welds, but not dual shield, right? What wire feed welder were you using?

Oh,,,after actually reading some,,,1/4 inch steel,,no bevel,,6011,,over head,,ok now,,,yeah like I said,,bevel,,land,,etc,,if you woulda kept on going,,you woulda had a big hole,,but you can weld better than most backyard kinda guys,,,,,,still didn't look at all pictures,,,still a little rough on stick,,,,,and mig looks good,,but on them corners,,you are supposed to weld around corners and stop outside corner area,,[cracks in corner areas],,,,but pretty good,,,[them close up pictures are rough too I know],, you doing good,,,,give you a b plus,,,thingy

Teach, just go to your friend's house and try out both the mig & the stick & make your own mind up. I like my mig but, I love my stick welder( cut my teeth on the stick) & use every time I have to weld ( unless it's thin stuff)

Thingy I am sure of one thing, any welds that you see me post on here in pictures will not be welds that I have made they will be my friends welding. If the above poster only got a B+ on those welds I am afraid you would try to use other letters of the alphabet below F on mine :)

I should probably not speak for sberry, but he quoted arc welding rods on his picture names, so I would expect they were GMAW (Arc) welded.

6011 would conventianally be AC
7018 probably DC but could go either way.
