Well pump with breaker AND fuse?

I talked to an electrician at a birthday party today. He said the box with fuses is not part of code at all. The disconnect switch is, the fuses are not. He said it could be hard wired in that box and it would be fine.

Fuses are very much part of code in all the jurisdictions I have worked. The second coment you make makes no sense. Hard wired simply means no cord and attached via conduit, armored flex etc. Fuses are still used when exact amperage requirements are needed. With 3 phase its a setup that uses "heaters" as the means to control motor current or via a frequency drive. In any case, fuses can be made to exacting tolerances with quick or slow acting protection, breakers are a close approximation. I would argue his comment but then, maybe your jurisdiction is not the same.
