Well if they are 15 years old, depending what species, they may push over like a rotten tooth with the FEL or pull easy with the drawbar, Can you rent a tractor for a day and abuse the rental to find out how much trouble they will be? Sometimes old rotten stumps are a piece of cake.

Jackpine...not my favorite tree. Short stumps...maybe 12" tall...but not very big trees when cut...maybe 12" diameter up to 14"-16". I think I need to take a closer look. Last time up at the property I kicked one and it "seemed" pretty firm. Need to take a maul and shovel to try a few...TMR

I have read discussions regarding "old" tree stumps being pushed out with the loader or pulled out with a back blade...here is my real world application question...

Assume I end up with a 30-40 HP CUT...maybe JD 3x20, Kubota 3x40 or similar size HP and frame. I have many (maybe 100+)jack pine stumps that were originally logged more than 10 years ago...likely 15+...not large...maybe 10"-14" diameter and about 12" stump height. They land is pretty gravely and drains very well so they have not been sitting in wet dirt.

My question is...what will I likely find if I am sitting on my new CUT as described above and I go out "determined" to try to "root out" my many stumps...and what is likely to "fail" if the stumps don't want to cooperate.

1) Is the FEL box the weak point or is the FEL arm structure bending the weak point?

2) Is there a blade that you mount on the front that is either mounted on the FEL arms...or mounted on a stronger mount?

3) I am "guessing" that you could pretty easily bend 3pt hitch parts trying to pull out the stumps?
Thanks All...TMR

Don't Push/Pull with the FEL........ Get them as lose as possible (with the other recommendations on this thread), then chains and the drawbar to pluck them from the hole. Don't ask me how I know this! :ashamed:

Thanks dtperks...ahh the "learning" curve...exactly what I am hoping to avoid (to the extent possible) :) TMR

I've had success with the following:

Get section of a log in the front loader and put it next to the stump you want to pull. Wrap chain around the stump and put it over the log and them to the draw bar. Now when you go to pull the stump, the chain going over the log has an upward and sideways force.

Good luck

Roy's right, of course, but the REAL answer is to rent a CUT and learn all the wrong things to do on their machine. . .

Something like this:

That still works very well and provides a distinct mechanical advantage. Being pine, I suspect the roots have long since became humus and the stumps should pop right out.

However, Amonimum Nitrate, diesel fuel, a ziplock bag and blasting cap do a fine job as well.

Well I hope it all comes out as easy as you make it sound. I never was that lucky.
I took out many stumps either with a Massey 35 or a JD 3520. Implied a lot of hard work and generally lasted several days. My wife says I never get dirtier than with stumps. The first stump was only a few months old, the second stump here was left by the 1999 hurricane, so about 12 years old, very very little rot and immensely strong. Both Lambert Cypress.

Or cut a basin in the stump top with your chain saw and plant flowers in it.

While mine may be tougher than I "hope"...they are no where near what you pulled out! Stumps are much smaller/15 years since logged...and Jackpine is not know as a "tough" rooted tree. On another property I have the Jackpine all get knocked down by the wind well b4 any Red or White pines will fall.

I am going to the property tomorrow and take a look...may try one or two ny hand to see how bad...:)

Thanks...TMR
