/ why does a rotary mower have only 2 cutting edges? #11
I'd venture a four cutting edge type would be able to move forward faster but require more power as more work is being done.:confused:

Note: the tip speed of the blades would have to be the same.

Honda has microcut. Which is 2 cutting edges, one mounted higher and slightly offset to the first. Not a true x configuration. I havent tried it personally, but ive read a few reviews that claim that do to the fine cut of the clippings, mulching is better (more even no clumps) and you can get more into the bag when bagging.

Whenever i have to replace the blade on my honda mower im going to check on the Microcut blades and see if theyll fit. Also cost and ease of maintenance would be considerations on whether or not ill buy them.

Honda has the Quadra Cut, and Snapper has the Ninja blade. 4 cut per rev.

So on the PT mower spindle, there are those spare holes. Would it make any sort of sense to add blades to those holes? (make each rotor a 4 blade instead of a 2 blade)

Carl,

Show us a picture if your spindles. I think the answer is that more blades on there would just collide with other blades.

You ever pedal an air fan exercise bike? The faster you pedal the harder it gets. If you add another blade to your mower, it will make the machine work twice as hard to spin it just through the air, let alone the grass.

I never thought of aerodynamic drag. Or actually getting that sort of mass rotating.

I upgraded my PT blades from soft 3/8" to hardened 1/2" blades custom made, and it does take the PT more time to wind up that big mower... Also Vibrations are more prevelant...

JJ, Here is a couple of pix of the belly of the beast.

Carl, Thanks.

My new observation on the four holes verses 2. If you wear or strip out the current hole the blades are mounted in, just switch the blades to the other set of holes.

I see you found that fence you were looking for.

As far as the number of blades, you could have from one blade to 20 blades on a mower set up as long as they are balanced, especially the one bladed cutter. The speed of the unit is dictated by the available HP, and motor limitations, and being down right dangerous at extraordinary speeds. One has to keep in mind, the weight of the object being thrown around by centrifugal force. There would be no difference in applied HP or speed, if the weight of the 4 blades equal the two blades, and so forth, with any number of blades.

Years ago, I remember someone came around and was trying to sell a new safety blade for a walk behind Snapper. It was a 14 in disk, with what looked like 4 in harden wire that swung freely in 4 holes. I didn't buy it, but was an interesting idea.

Just another interesting mower concept. Thy hve een around awhile and have there uses.
