The heavy pigment reds and blue's do seem to command a premium..

For what it is worth my "Cruise control" (actually just holds a particular hydro pedal position after your foot establishes it, to the nearest ratchet click) is on the right side and below the steering wheel. Mostly I never ever decouple the brake pedals. I did it once to see how it worked. But after all this talk about how impossible it is to do on a Kubota I will be sure to try it with mine. I expect it is not difficult at all.

Thanks to all who contributed.

Also I don't recall who mentioned differential braking while backdragging with the front wheels in the air but thanks a bunch dude! I don't know why that didn't occur to me but I have always trusted to dumb luck to "aim" me when back dragging and have been suprisingly successful. I think I will like trying differential braking to steer while the front wheels are in the air.

Just a moment guys, I'll get out of the way in a second and the spurious attacks and flames can continue.

Just wanted to say that no matter how much religious zeal you have for a color, restating a position or chanting it in a chorus doesn't make it so. There have been lots of comments made that were moderate but moderation isn't so much fun to counter so we ignore those and lump the author of them in with more inflamatory commentary.

Where are the posts actually claiming that ALL tractors are alike. Plenty of rhetoric counteering these posts but where are these posts??? I have seen no posts claiming that JD is inherently bad. Most of the moderates, myself included, make a very modest claim that feature for feature in many cases JD costs more. This is not an absolute but a general trend and it is easy to cite counter examples. Most of the populaton of the US is not the average height! Lots of examples of folks shorter and taller and very few actually AT the average height. Does that invalidate the average height?

Ok, back at it guys I gotta go to lunch.

It is common to see statements like this in many of the threads/forums for brands other than Deere.

You would think there would be a GREEN dealer around who was competitively priced. Around here, JD was CHEAPER than Case IH, New Holland AND Kubota. Guess it just depends upon where you are and what the market will bear.

Lots of opinions here on this topic. I've found that price is purely dependent upon the dealers in your area and the competition in the area. Some Deere dealers face stiffer competition from other manufacturers and tend to negotiate somewhat better than those with less competition. The same can be said for the other manufacturers as well. A lot of the price depends on the overhead of the dealership and how much profit they must make to stay in business. Personally it comes down to this. Buy what you want and get the best price on that unit.

I agree with this but would add that part of the reason some dealers can negotiate prices better is because manufacturers might want to get a foot hold in an area. Or an area has been a good seller for them and they are starting to lose market share etc, Whatever the reason sometimes manufacturers will give particular dealers better prices on their product than to others.

And for what it is worth I saw the post about air ride seats. I would love to have an air ride seat. My montana seat is pretty primitive.

I have always been a Kubota fan. But I don't have orange blinders on either. When I began looking for my new upcoming tractor purchase I first looked at Kubota, of course. I have studied the Kubota M8540 and know it better than the back of my hand. I have driven it and it feels more comfortable than my vehicle. When driving it I feel that it and I are one. Okay, so that may be a little bit much. But I also checked out New Holland. I looked at the NH TN75. I really, really liked the specs and its looks. But I didn't like the operator's platform or instrument panel. I checked out John Deere 5425. Comparably equipped to the Kubota M8540 I am considering, the JD cost $8,000 to $9,000.00 more!! Now all of these are nice, quality tractors that I wouldn't mind having. But I think my decision is pretty easy.;)

Dargo look at the price difference he is seeing does those numbers look familiar, I believe an earlier poster said the price difference he saw was not 8000.00 but it was very close. Someone else said there was a big difference between a unit they checked out and a John Deere. Are you skeptical of everyone that makes these kind of statements. or are you just going to be gracious and say you did not realize that there was that big a price difference in some localities.

We run a lot of JD equipment. We have 6 JD tractors: 2440, 2640, 2-6200's, 6420, and a 7410. All our hay equipment is JD: 1460 discbine, 925 MoCo, 17' tedder, 10 wheel v rake, and a 567 round baler and a JD square baler. Our other JD equipment includes a 20' HX 20 batwing, 2 ztr mowers, 3 bottom plow 11' & 15' Frontier finishing mowers, and a 10' MX10 bush hog.

You could say I have some experience with JD equipment. The reason we run Deere is because of the dealer. The Deere dealer is far superior to all other dealers in our area. Their service is second to none and to us thats important. Sure we pay more for Deere equipment but its worth it for us.

The resale value is another thing that comes into play for us. An example. We bought our 6420 3 years ago and paid $55000 for it. It's 4-wd and has a cab and loader. It now has 1000 hours and we could easily sell it today for that price. Why, because the new prices have went up and our's is as good as new. Thats pretty much what you call using a tractor for free. All you pay is the fuel and maintenance bills.

We're pretty much Deere all the way for the reasons stated above and we'll probibly stay that way unless something drastic happens.

Man, I went hunting and came back to all of this. Didn't mean to start a war. Even so, I've learned a lot. Here's a few more things to ponder...

1) I'm down to JD and Kubota, looking in the 40-50hp range.
2) The closest JD dealer I've talked to has been consistently high. Come to find out, a lot of locals are not real happy with them after the sale.
3) I really like the local Kubota place. They've always been very organized and helpful. They also have a great area to test drive their tractors.
4) After getting a few more quotes, I'd say that the JD and Kubota are within 5-7%. It's hard to tell, exactly, because there is no such thing as an "equivalent" tractor between brands.
5) I'm going to visit a few more dealers later this week and see what I can find out. Also, get a little more seat time.

Keep up the good work. I enjoy all of the opinions.
