Dargo look at the price difference he is seeing does those numbers look familiar, I believe an earlier poster said the price difference he saw was not 8000.00 but it was very close. Someone else said there was a big difference between a unit they checked out and a John Deere. Are you skeptical of everyone that makes these kind of statements. or are you just going to be gracious and say you did not realize that there was that big a price difference in some localities.

Okay. To be more precise the price difference was $8,948.00.

I checked out John Deere 5425. Comparably equipped to the Kubota M8540 I am considering, the JD cost $8,000 to $9,000.00 more!! Now all of these are nice, quality tractors that I wouldn't mind having. But I think my decision is pretty easy.;)

Um, I just bought a JD 5425. And, I most certainly compared prices with a Kubota M8540. When equipped as close as possible, the difference was about $1200. I'm not saying you're lying, but look at the picture attached for your proof. You picked the wrong two tractors on that comparison to try to prove me wrong. I have way too many hours comparing the exact tractors you mentioned. Sorry, the difference is $1200. I ought to know, I wrote the check. ;) And, just in case you think I don't like Kubota, note the L5030HSTC I also have.

Nothing personal, but I don't think I need to go over any further nonsense. I wasn't going to bring up specifics accurate as of two weeks ago, but someone else did for me now. Anyone is free to believe what they want. I'll just opt to believe what I know; what I wrote a check for. Over and out. :)

Oh, what was that you were saying Gemini??

Check out my post just before yours for specifics. Of course, I am looking at dealers in separate rural counties. So, if it came down to the nitty-gritty of signing on the dotted line the prices may actually be extremely close once all's said and done. I don't have a problem with JD. That's just the prices I found.

Dargo, I think you hit on 6 key words. I've looked over a lot of brands, and what I see is that it is often difficult to get apple-to-apple comparisons. But while it is difficult, it is not impossible. While pricing is often regional, brands within a region must compete. An astute shopper can make a cost/feature spreadsheet to get a real comparison of a comparably equipped machine. I've often found that when large price differences exist between machines then they are not comparable in many ways.

Further, there are dozens of hard to quantify differences like "better ergonomics" or "better design" or "better quality" or "more suitable for my tasks."

Now we can all argue about better ergonomics or better design or better quality. But only the user can determine what is most suitable for his own tasks.

Dargo,

I like the FEL mounted receiver hitch on the Kubota. It sure is easy to navigate a trailer into tight spots with it up front. Much easier than navigating this thread without getting burnt!

By the by, 6 years ago when I bought my last new tractor, the Kubota L3410 HST with FEL and filled R4's was $1490 cheaper than a deere 4300 HST with the small FEL and un-filled Ag tires.

Don't know about others but I have a feeling ones preferences will be different if their living is dependant on the machinery they use.

The hay is down and dry ready for bailing and the tractor breaks down? Happens to all colours.

How fast can you get that broken machine fixed is the question that lies Blowing in the wind.:D

I don't make my living with machines. Use them for "recreational purposes" or as some would say real work but not vital to my survival.

Changes the aspect of how you approach machinery purchasing as applies to your local location.

EG: Go to "Big Farm Country" and you may have trouble finding a Kubota dealer. :D

I'm gonna have to back him up on this Dargo. In the upper M-Series tractors the cost difference litteraly can be 6000-8000. The M125X really is about $6000 cheaper than the closest CNH tractor which I sell, and typicaly those are a good $2000 cheaper than Deere. There is never going to be 100% apples to apples comparison, The M's do run low when it comes to hydraulic flow out the remotes, however for every feature they lack they seem to offer somthing else.

Well, this is where you and I will have to simply disagree. First, I didn't shop 125 hp tractors. Are you telling me that I could have purchased the M125X for the same price as a M8540? If so, I really screwed up. I was under the impression that the M125X was a few bucks more than the M8540. But since you are using that tractor to compare I have to assume that you're telling me that they are the same price?! Second, my local JD dealer is also the CNH dealer. On some models the JD is more expensive and on some other models the CNH is more expensive. So, I am to assume also that you agree that there is $8000 difference in the 40 to 50 hp tractors similarly equipped also as previously stated?? Certainly you don't agree with an earlier statement that all tractors are good, so just buy by price, are you?

No two people are going to agree on everything, and I simply do not agree with you on this. I spent two weeks shopping and, as you can see, I did purchase another tractor. I like Kubota plenty well, but in the size and series I compared, I did like the JD tractor $1200 more. This is in spite of the fact that I already own a Kubota tractor and would give them the benefit of the doubt in a toss up. I guess I should say that I could have saved around 8000 to 9000 if I'd bought a Tractor King tractor from Rural King in the same HP range. But, there we would get back into my assertion that not all tractors are of equal quality. Oh well...

Hey, you and my wife are beating me due to my tractor affliction. After all, I do have to show that I'm not partial to one particular color. BTW, I do have one other tractor that's even a different color. I'll just call it my mystery tractor. ;) Maybe my wife won't see it in the back of the barn. :D
