Oil & Fuel Why not use a funnel with a screen to fill fuel?

I was just leafing through my 3520 owners manual and I came across this. On page Safety- 7 "If using a funnel, make sure it is plastic and has no screen or filter.". I don't use a funnel so it dosn't matter to me, but I wonder why you shouldn't use a screen or filter. Anybody know why JD doesn't approve? The only thing I can think of is JD thinks it could clog and spill, beyond that I haven't a clue.

I have always used a funnel with a screen. And my present funnel is plastic. I would also love to hear the explanation for this. But, I don't own a JD. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

i don't know the reason for that , but i will just tell you that i have been fueling lots of equiptment, lawn mowers, GT's, farm tractors, etc, have never used a screen in the funnel, and have never had a fuel prolem caused by dirt or sediment in the fuel. In MHO if you have that much stuff in your fuel cans that you need a screen to catch it , you need to change where you get your fuel and get new containers

My Kubota has a plastic screen that sits in the fuel filler tube.

Since it's in safety and specifying plastic, I'm guessing they're worried about a spark.

Plastic is the worst case senario for sparks. Makes for static electricity build up from the flowing fuel and no ground. Most designs using plastic will have a metat to meta contact from the fuel supply to container to ground somewhere in the system.

I use a large plastic funnel with a built-in coarse screen, and it has caught minor wind-blown items and stuff I didn't know was in the can. No explosions yet, but I don't think static will ignite diesel, at least not at 1 atmosphere of pressure /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It may be plastic because <font color="green">JD</font> has a <font color="red"> red </font> plastic funnel that they sell at dealerships. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif I have one that I use to fill my <font color="green"> JD </font>mower and <font color="orange"> Kubota </font>tractor. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Funnels with screens restrict the flow a lot.

I just sit my fuel container on the hood, stick a TSC kero siphon into it with the other end into the tank, start it siphoning by squeezing the bulb and stand and watch it. Found out I need to stay and watch it because it goes in quite fast. Have overflowed it when I decide to do something else at the same time.
