"Figures don't lie, but liars can figure."

Book title from long ago: "Lies, D@$# lies and Statistics."

Bummer to be arrested for shooting into the ground while stopping an alleged burgar leaving his neighbor's window. I suppose the alleged buglar will file a civil suit for intentional infliction of emotional distress, too.

The nut jobs will always be out there and guns are easy for them to buy. But there aren't that many nut jobs. The majority of people in the USA who die from guns are either suicides or accidental. So if one of your guns is used to kill a person it will probably be by one of those two ways.

If my memory serves me right. When the great depression started and the Stock market fell. The Chief method of taking you own life was to Jump off a building???

You probably have a better memory than I. I had to read that book many years ago, but I would have had no idea now who the author was.

Bird, I think I'm one step away from having to write my name on my underwear and wear a note pinned to my shirt, "If found return to..." I had to look the author up.

I had to print my last name, first initial and service number (B22 70 75, SIR!!!) on my skivies in boot camp...never gave up that practice...

Roy as long as it's out of habit and not necessity, you should be OK.

Duke, you are correct.....a response to a situation depends on many factors, each situation is unique and circumstances vary. FYI, I selected option 3 because there was no immediate life threat, LEO was outnumbered, backup was needed, delay could wait for backup and fewer bystanders.

Welcome to TBN....and thanks for your service...and good judgement under stress:thumbsup:

Duke there is no choice other than 3, as a LEO myself I am always concerned with how many people get ther ideas from Hollywood!
As far as those concerned about guns and suicide some one will always find a way. We haven't had a suicide by gun so far this year but can you believe 3 by Amtrac (train) since beginning of the year. What a mess!!! But so far no one wants to ban trains haha.

Suicide rates between Canada and the USA are virtually identical. One would suspect that if guns caused suicides that the USA would have a much higher rate than Canada. Apparently the argument against having guns because of suicides is a Red Herring.
...

Years ago I read that one of the major rationales for restricting hand gun ownership in Canada was to prevent suicide. What I also read was that the gun laws did lower firearm suicide but that the overall suicide rate and number remained the same.

Suicide by firearms in Canada peaked at about 5 per 100,000 around 1982 according to one report, and declined to about 2 per 100,000 in 2002. This was a pretty consistent decline especially from 1991 onwards.

From 1986 to 2002 the total suicide rate range from about 18 to 25 per 100,000. There were some dips in that period around 1993 but the rate remained pretty steady around 22 to 25 until about 1999 when the rate dropped to 20 for a few years. In 2001 the rate dropped to about 19 and remained steady to the end of the study period.

It is hard to describe two different graphs with words but it would be hard to argue that the Canadian handgun restrictions impacted the overall suicide rate for any length of time. I THOUGHT that the Canadian handgun restrictions were in the mid 90s?

One graph is here, Suicide - Social Report 2010 while the suicide by firearm graph is on this link on page 40, ARCHIVED - PDF document
