Wood storage

/ Wood storage #61
I'm glad I cut and split my own wood and don't have to worry about the measurements. I know when someone asks me how much wood I split, I usually round up to the nearest cord (or two). Sounds like I got more done.

Had are first rattlesnake in the old wood pile this week...

The new wood is up in metal racks with a concrete base... hope this keeps the rattlesnakes at bay.

I've never heard any confusion before.

No problem. Give me a source that defines a 'face cord'. Many States have laws that state firewood can only be sold by the cord, or some fraction thereof. So list a credible source for a face cord.

Different state laws and weights-and-measures departments regulate the sale of firewood in different ways (or not at all). In MA, only cords or fractional cords are allowed as measure, but you will still see other units (pickup loads, bundles, wheelbarrow loads, pallets, etc.) in ads. Other states as I understand it do allow (and define) such things as ricks and face cords. So where you are matters.
Wow, that is a lot of state intervention. East Coast.

Do people measure the wood? I though most people just had it dumped in the yard. So you are taking some on faith, and if you don't get what you want, you don't go back.

1/3 of a cord. So if you know what a cord is, you know what a face cord is.

I don't need the governments involvement in buying firewood.

Full cord = 48" tall, 48" deep, 8'long. Face cord is 1/3 of a full cord, so 48" tall, 16" deep, 8' long. Let's put this to rest and talk about tractors...

So you're not in favor of anyone checking the gas station to see if they are really selling you a gallon ?
You don't mind getting 9/10 each time the 1 rolls around ? You're for abolishing the whole Weights and Measures thingy, and letting the butcher weigh his thumb 50 times/day ?

I looked up Webster's dictionary definition of a face cord...here it is:

a unit of wood cut for fuel equal to a stack 4 × 8 feet with lengths of pieces from about 12 to 16 inches

"about 12-16"....ahahhaaaaaa.....why not 8" ? why not 24" ?

"Face" it dude....you're being a Zerk........

About how long does it take to season cut and split hardwood?

Around here with the very hot and dry summers it can be cut and split in January and ready for fall...

At the cabin where it is not so hot but can be very humid the standard is two years properly stacked with a board or length of trim over the top.

I've resisted building a proper wood shed because of snake concerns...

I refuse to live where snakes are a problem. But isn't a pile of wood the same as stacked pile of wood in a shed, with respect to snakes?

Not sure...

On the side of the garden she the tin roof overhangs 30 inches... I also have a concrete apron that extends out 4'

All the split firewood is a foot above the cement on steel racks and stacked a single row deep...

So far I have yet to encounter snakes, bugs or even rodents.

The old wood crib that came with the place is on top of old pallets with a huge tarp covering... seems rates, snakes, black widow spiders all found it very comfortable.

The snakes and other creatures seem to love setting up housekeeping in the pallets.

No pun intended - Bay Area!

Hey... I resemble that remark...

Actually, I can live just about everywhere... that said San Francisco makes a gorgeous backdrop to a setting sun from my living room... if I didn't have out of town guests I would never set foot in SF.

Plus... it is home to the Air Quality Management District which has declared war on wood heating, antifreeze windshield washer fluid, BBQ, Lawn Mowers, Wood Chippers... and any 50+ HP diesels...

Not in my opinion. I keep my wood on a concrete floor under a roof. I have never seen a snake in the wood or found a snake skin. Wood stacked on the ground is a bigger problem.

Could be the previous owners had it all stack on rotting pallets on the ground...

Setting the wood on metal racks above concret has so far eliminated the problem... there is really nowhere to hide

I stack my wood directly on the concrete, and I have never had a problem. Homeless people were a bigger person. That's the reason for the barb wire fence seen in several of the pictures I have posted.

This is for Ohio http://www.agri.ohio.gov/public_docs/News/2008/news_admn_110308_firewoodtips.pdf

Non-packaged firewood must be sold by the cord or by fractions of a cord. One cord,
when properly stacked, should be 8 feet long by 4 feet high and 4 feet wide (128 cubic
feet).

I love Ohio. How much clearer can they make it?

"It is illegal to sell firewood by any other unit of measurement such as a rick, rack, facecord, or truckload. If a consumer believes that a seller did not comply with these rulesand regulations, the person should immediately contact the seller."
