LTV closed in 2003 during that downturn in production. That's who my father-in-law retired from. This graft is confusing since is shows that LTV used natural ore but he worked in their pellet plant..

Wow - LTV. Brings back memories.

I knew Paul Thayer (former CEO of LTV) when he was on the board of Anheuser-Busch.

He was convicted of insider trading by giving insider information to his mistress at the time.
Huge scandal back in the day.

Yeah, one small spot in the country.
Lets see the rest.

Steel production is in the toilet. Down 50% since 1969.

Also, look at how many companies that were American are no longer. Now foreign owned.

Let’s see you spin that into sunshine mossy…

LTV dissolved in 2001. It took a while for their assets to get bought up, as I understood it.

I was referring to iron ore production, not steel production.

As for 1 small spot in the country, 4 of the 5 largest iron ore mines in the US are in Minnesota, and the 5th is next door in Michigan.

If you look at steel production in the US, it hasn't changed much in 40 years.

It tanked in the 70s due to cheaper imports. As that happened, industry consolidation ended up with the closing of many smaller mills and concentrating in northwest Indiana. Indiana has, since the mid 70s, produced about 1/4 of all steel produced in the US.

Their source of iron ore? Minnesota and Michigan.

The US is #4 in steel production world wide. Considering that the US is not even in the top 10 of world iron ore production, that's pretty amazing.

My mother in-law worked on the assembly line for AM General when it was owned by LTV for a while. ;)

What is truly amazing is Japan is #3 in world wide steel production yet produces no iron ore.

I believe they have no natural resources used in steel production.

Yes - I believe you are correct. They use none of their natural resources. That is what I was trying to say.

Japan imports over $15 billion of iron ore used in steel production. They are the #2 importer of iron ore in the world.

Maybe someday we will come back to our senses and start making lots of things here again, railroads will expand their presence, and more jobs making critical goods, like steel, will return to improve our national & economic security.

But I kinda doubt it.

One of the reasons they wanted to expand their empire before WWII. But, that's in the past.

At least they have those bullet trains...

😆

There are high speed trains all over europe and asia.
Still waiting for a true high speed train here.
Acela has to go slow for most of it's trip.

The bullet train in Japan is relatively inexpensive compared to Amtrak.
And it's clean and on time, and comfortable.

I rode the bullet trains all over France. Makes you darn near cry when you see the junk we ride in here.
That bullet train flys.

You must know they run engineer free ore trains in Australia?
They're run here too, I think. I'm no expert, but I've seen warning signs at train yards warning about "unoccupied" switching locomotives, or something similar.

"employees must not ride on platforms or walkways and must not ride on steps when coupling"

What does that leave as acceptable locations?
