Yanmar 17 ???

This is getting interesting. Does anyone know if there is, in fact, a YM176/177? That sure looks like the 187 hood and markings, except for the"17". Also it looks like the throttle is pulled back, (off for US). Who would shut off a tractor and then pull the throttle wide open, (gray)?

According to Tractortips.com there was not a domestic Yanmar that started with 17. Like you I also thought that the throttle looked like it was pulled back in the off position. It is kind of hard to tell from the angle the photo was taken.

Thanks guys,

The 1702 and 20 do resemble the picture posted in relation to the oil/fuel filter and where and how they are mounted. I have had the picture a couple of days and called, emailed and generally talked about the tractor, also looked here in search and archives and found -or- got nothing. This morning is when I thought I'd drop it on TBN and ask the experts.

Must admit I did not notice the throttle position until you brought that up. The friend has tractors....and he is a tractor guy. I know he has an 8N and JD, but admitted to me he knew nothing about the Yanmar and grey market tractors in general. As far as it's mechanical condition he is as qualified as many to make that determination.....his concern was it's value, parts support and general questions about maintenance issues..

AHA!!! "There are also very rare Yanmar tractors that are hard to get parts for like the YM2200, YM2700, and YM177."

This comes from the Hoyetractor website, so that's my guess, YM177. I got to get a job, too much time on my hands.

Norm, If your correct, than I would strongly advise against buying a model with little or no parts support.

"A friend has asked me about a Yanmar 4x4 model 17 that he found in the back of a JD dealership."

Be sure and tell that to your friend, Mark.

It does not matter really what model 17 this baby is. 176 or 1702 etc... it is not worth near $4900.00 even if in good mech shape which I doubt......

I have not seen this tractor, only the same picture you have seen. He lives in Arkansas, so it's not like I can go take a look. I agree to some extent that the outside or physical appearance may have something to do with the resale value. I do not think it impacts the price that much. A S-CUT 4X4 with a finish mower asking price of $4900. is not unreasonable IF it runs well, and has good parts support.

I can't judge this book by it's cover.

How many Look great, shinny new paint, belts, hoses and tires but have considerable wear and tare from excessive use with hour meters set back or zeroed out??

Sure, you can make a poorly taken care of tractor look great with paint, belts wax, fluids--but one that looks poorly taken care of is more likely to be in poor shape. I guess if its just faded paint and everything is mechanically in order, those are the ones that are most likely to run well for a while. The model is what I would be worried about. Could be an orphan for parts.

Not a 177. This is a fairly new tractor (02, 20 series). You can tell by the location of the hydraulic filter. Even the 01,10 series didn't have the filter configuration.
