Yanmar 17 ???

Check the pto lever. I see a factory insert in the sheetmetal, blocking the upper position. probably leaving 1, N, 2.

arthr31,

I have a 1601D too, and there are similarities, but there are some big differences as well. Externally mounted filters for one, the throttle position mentioned earlier, the ROPS of course, and now as Norm said the plug that indicates a two speed PTO selector.

The price now is: $4200 with out the finish mower. And I should have more numbers....valve cover id, etc. That might help....so would a picture of what's under the hood.

Mark:

Do you have any idea if it's a two or three cylinder engine yet? I don't know if this is anyhelp but my 187 has two PTO speeds 540 & 1000 and a 3 cylinder engine, but there are plenty of american sales yanmars with two or three cylinder engines.

As you can see it has the generic "YANMAR DIESEL" hood decals
That is what my original stickers look like on mine and that is what the stickers in my parts book look like that I just ordered

Like Brent said is sure is starting to look like a Yanmar made for american sales. If parts are avabile could make a neat little tractor.

1) Setting on a JD lot for sale (most of the dealers around here won't have a gray setting on there lot for any reasion)
2) Style of hood and sheet metal
3) Filter locations
4) Hood stickers look original
5) Throttle position
6) ROPS shape (by what I can see looks like mine, but mine is square tubing and this one looks like round?)

Did I miss anything?

I would not pay 4200.00 for that tractor but I would give near 700.00 for that finish mower. Looks like the best part of the rig.....Having said that I would have to really check out the tractor and mower to evaluate price.. One thing bothering me is that if a JD dealer is selling it don't they know anything about it? Are they willing to work on it? Do they know where they can get parts? Any 30 day warranty or such? Which engine and transmission are in it? Is it 2 or 3 cyl? Manual or powershift?

This tractor is still bugging me. There are things that make me think it might be a grey market and some that make me think domestic model.

Grey things:
1. Frame/chassis color. The grey markets of this style had the green chassis. The domestics that look like this one had black chassis's.

2. The rear tires look like rice tires.

3. The circular 17 plate on the side of the hood. The YM186 and 187 I just looked at pictures of had the whole model number on it.

4. I have not been able to find a domestic model with 17 in the model number.

5. The engine sides screens are white, they should be red.

Domestic things:

1. The grill fits the bill of a domestic model, so do those little side grills on the side of the hood. None of the grey models had the mesh on the side of the hood.

2. The hazard lights on the fenders are the large diameter, the same size found on the domestic models. The grey models this size had small flashers.

3. The picture is fuzzy but I see things under the tractor that make me think it might have had a mid mount mower at some time. And the mount looking objects hanging from the front bumper.

4. The PTO shifter stop.

Mark777, get us some pictures, I'm on a roll.

Brent,

Yes, perplexing. I have not given up, but the information here (TBN) even the opinions are from sound logic.

The only information that may be considered an update is it is a 3 cylinder and the id tag on the valve cover is missing. The rivets are there.....but no engine id plate.

And another picture, but more of the same information.

Regards, Mark

Hard to see, but it looks to have the power steering valve of a grey.

 / Yanmar 17 ??? #50
I dunno Mark. I don't see anything that I could give concrete advice on. But, I will say, that the more pictures I see, the less sure I am the machine is legit. The green/gray spray paint over "everything", the strange s/n? I dunno, either it has been seriously jacked with or it is so rare that it's hard to tell what it really is... good luck. -arthr

arthr31,

I dunno too. In fact the more I find out about it, the less sure I am of my original opinions. The fact that it has a power steering valve made me think domestic....but I haven't seen enough of the three digit models to support this either.

Mark,
See if your friend can get a some pics of the dashboard, the underside of the tractor, and some closer shots of the PTO levers or anything that might have some writing on it. I would like to see whether the text is Japanese or English.

That's not a ROPS. That is a sunshade system. This is a grey market. I bet 1702, or 1720.

 / Yanmar 17 ??? #56
Notice the supposedly Rops are connected around the PTO, not the axles. Brent, You should have caught this!! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Bruce:

I have a ROPS on mine and it does connect just like that one (or at last what I can see in the picture). It bolts in six places, three on each side and it's bolted to each side of the tranny with the PTO in the middle, but like I said before mine is square tubing not round like this one shows. If I can get the pic to post in here you can see the three redish colored spacers are where it bolts to.

The fuel cap is a gray market style

Bruce:

After looking between the two pic's I still think it bolts up like a ROPS, but I think your guess on a sunshade mount is more likely correct. The back end on the pic Mark posted everthing is roundish and on the one I posted everything is more squareish...boy the sounded technical huh?

I've got a couple more pic's if anyone thinks it might help to go back and forth on, I think I might be adding to the confusion though, got one of each side and one of the engine compartment with the hood up
