In the process of going thru the tiller getting it cleaned up and I am quite impressed with the condition of a 40 plus year old implement, did some evapo-rust soak on rusty brackets and there is almost zero surface pitting. This is not how normal steel looks..

I have the same tiller i bought probably 15 yrs ago, It works great after i made brackets to extend the lift pins out about 4 inches. Otherwise the tiller would hit the tires when i lifted it up.

If you are going to paint the tiller, a good time is when you have the tines off.

She's definitely gonna get a facelift since I don't see me trying to till what is virtual concrete at the moment. In the spring after the rains when she's all pretty I'll get it dirty.

So here she is all spiffed up, hate to get her dirty.

Although it did hook up and clear the rear wheels the driveshaft was not going to work so I sketched up extension brackets and another member Cataclysm was kind enough to transfer it to cad so they could be laser cut. I have the file if anyone wants to reproduce them.

Wow! That is new from the factory, right?

Awesome job! You should teach classes, or RunDa YouTube channel on restoration...

All the best,

Peter

Came out good but it helps when it's decent to begin with.

True, but I think that there is more than a little skill and talent involved...
Started doing repair work on 6wd weapons carriers (keep them running) almost 50 years ago and advanced thru Triumph TR6's then onto Jeep Wrangler TJ's I'm doing now. I pick up skills as I go along and now I love this Yanmar stuff. There's a Jeep chassis in the background under restoration

I prefer to leave surfaces intact whenever possible otherwise treat as necessary but I really spend a lot of time with scotch bright's , small ss or brass brushes and Dawn/hot water. A fresh gallon of Evapo-rust for de-crapping the hardware always a good thing, the paint was all rattle can.

Sometimes the rut is so intense and continuous with minor pitting a wire wheel brush on a drill would greatly help and reduce the time. A set of 4 or 5 wheels with coupon from Harbor Freight puts the cost at a mere $4. Hard to beat the price for the simple effort of getting a job nicely done to remove rust.

How does the tiller look now? Will it be fully ready come Spring?

Ha, I should of scrolled back a page. Really nice work overall, even for rattle can work. It's a restored beauty.

With the weather finally in the cooperative mode it was time to get hooked up and put to work. The ground/earth was fairly dry and probably has not been touched in more than half a century but the tiller ran thru two 70 foot runs like it wasn't there. Tiller left a 10" deep layer of lovely fluff that took 5 minutes to rake out. This old Yanmar stuff is incredible

On the Yanmar today cutting grass!! My front yard in my profile. Made a trip to Fredricks Yrs. Ago for a Yanmar Tiller. Mothers Garden. The walk behind was just to much work and did a very poor job. Getting up there in age. RS1400 and was the last tiller they had left. A loaded Semi truck was there fixing to head out. Full load of Tractors and equipment. Spalding told me I'd better go get it. Well worth the 1.5 Hr. drive. It made planting and keeping up so much easier. The pic. is as low as I could actully get it. Notice No smoke from the Exhaust either.

Oh my, I found out what the REAR BAR is used for on the Yanmar tillers. I would of never guessed this. See it in action. Great vid.

Now I really, really, really, want a Yanmar tiller !
