Good morning everyone. I'm new to the group and could use some help figuring out what model yanmar tiller I have. I recently acquired this tiller in a barter deal. It is missing a few parts, but they're not essential for operation. I knew I would have to fabricate some components in order for it to work with my quick hitch and function properly with my little Kubota BX23s. I have spent hours scouring the web looking at pictures, reading forums, and scratching my head while doing so. Not sure if its some kind of Frankenstein unit that was built from random parts or if it's some rare model that not many people have.

Some information that might help is that it is roughly 1400mm working width, has 35 tine mounting points, and is chain drive. Originally it was red and at some point was painted a grayish-green with a stenciled rattle can yanmar logo.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's missing parts . . .

This was a 2-point rotary tiller converted to 3-point.
1400mm is very helpful. The 1400 will be in the model designation. (y)

I'll have to study this one close enough and see if the YTOG has the manual for it.

I don't recognize that model. It's not the earlier, green, RS1400 that came original on many YM2000 tractors.

But I can tell you a little that may help you put it in service.

The unpainted flat plates are adapters to make it compatible with generic 3-point geometry. Because unmodified, raising the 3-point will bring the tiller into contact with the rear tires. I see holes in those plates where 3-point pins were likely installed. These plates locate the pins forward a few inches from where the original pins were located. The added adapter plates have a bolt into where the original pins were.

Yanmar used a unique 'bridge' in place of the usual top link. It had a short top link mounted to a hinge that was several inches back from the usual tractor top link location. This geometry made the tiller rotate back away from the tires as the 3-point was raised. Here's a post in an old tiller thread showing the unique Yanmar OEM 'bridge' top ink.

I modified a back blade in a manner similar to the modifications on your tiller, to make it compatible with my quick hitch. It now has a new pair of pins forward and slightly higher than the original pins. Here's my post describing this. It may give you some ideas for making your tiller usable.

I'm leaning towards an RS1404 model due to the certain top-link OE parts and the chain housing having the bottom protective kick plate. And this model has the lube port at the top too.

See attached PDF.

Exactly.

@REBELBOWTIE

This update allows the PTO drive shaft to be longer than the short stubby one often seen with these Yanmar rotary tillers.

I have a hunch, this was reconditioned either at Fredricks or Southern Farm Equipment since you are in Georgia.

I think their preparation for resale, would include painting the adapters.

My theory is 'some farmer with a welder'. Who stopped at functional and rugged. ( BTDT :))

Those tines seem unusually short.

Gear Drive I never found the need for the rear leveling wheels. Fredricks! Told it was doubtful I would need them. Last one they had at the time. New Tines Etc. 600 I believe.

Could those tines be for rocky soil? We used to have a tiller that had an extra set of tines (called pick tines?) for use in hard or rocky soils.

All the best, Peter

Rock hard clay soil is what I call it. The few Yrs. I used it I never noticed any Significant wear on the tines. The first turn was slow but afterward it was easy going! typical sears Walk behind was previously used. That could be true considering it was Org. used for tilling rice Patty's. Most of them you see have worn out tines. I believe you can get them still but tillers might be hard to come by. I was told mine was the last one and we had to go to a back warehouse and dig it out!!
