MAHINDRA4500 Mahindra
Can't Stop It
Model Year: 2003

I am the second owner of this 2003 4-wheel drive Mahindra 4500. The hour meter stopped working at over 800 hours. The funny thing is that everything else works great. This has been a great tractor. We use it to plow snow on about a mile of dirt road in the winter as well as mowing a grass airstrip, and excavation and moving stuff all over the property. I have worked this tractor pretty hard and I'm about to buy my third set of front tires. It has been very reliable and I've done nothing more that change the oil and keep it greased. The best thing is winter starting. My Dad has a small Kabota that is a pain to get running in the winter. My Mahindra fires right up, even down to 0 degrees. It will lope for a minute and then run all day. Fuel economy is also excellent. It always surprises me how little fuel I use for the amount of work that I do with it. I would definitely buy this tractor again.

Pros: Outstanding tractor for the money, very reliable
Cons: Would be nice to have a little more power on occasion but it always gets the job done so I can't complain too much

MAHINDRA4500 Mahindra
Tractor Mostly Good, Backhoe Way Undersized For The Tractor
Model Year: 2017

(Dealer name removed) should stick to campers because they suck at tractors. The tractor is too strong for the backhoe and there are other ongoing issues. (Dealer name removed) told us that Mahindra tractors are comparable to much larger horsepower tractors of other manufacturers. He assured us that the 4540 would be the workhorse that we needed. On 03/08/2017 we paid approximately $30,000.00 cash for the Mahindra 4540 with a front-end loader and backhoe for what we believed to be the best of the best in tractors. At 3 hours of operation, the teeth on the backhoe started breaking. We were advised that the teeth would be $48 each and that they did not stock them. At 20 or 30 hours of operation, the tractor got stuck in first gear and the hydraulic hoses were leaking. We found that the transmission was a known issue in India, but this was the first in North America and that it would take some time to get the part in but were assured that this would correct the problem. At 30 to 50 hours of operation, the joy stick that operates the boom cylinder on the backhoe broke and fell forward, allowing the backhoe to slam forward, ruining the seals in the boom cylinder on the backhoe. When we attempted to perform an oil change, the first of several errors in the Mahindra manual was discovered. Unable to locate the oil specified in the manual, we contacted the mechanic at (dealer name removed). He advised that the lubrication capacities and types of oil to use in the tractor are incorrect in the manuals and that we should consult him because he had seen similar issues in the past. Had we been successful in locating the oil that the manual indicated, major damage could have resulted. At 80 to 100 hours of operation, the subframe on the backhoe broke in 2 places, nearly crushing my husband. We were growing increasingly concerned about the integrity of the equipment we purchased and began to suggest that a refund of our purchase price or a new tractor should be considered. As a result, (dealer name removed) had the area rep come in and evaluate the tractor. We were advised that the equipment had been abused and neglected. They alleged a failure of proper maintenance and working the tractor beyond its capabilities. (Dealer name removed) was well aware of the work this tractor/backhoe would be performing and assured us that this tractor would easily complete the work we described. We have used it for nothing beyond the scope of what was described. Further, my husband has operated and worked on tractors since he was 14 and became a certified mechanic through PPG Industries in the 1980s. All maintenance had been performed according to the manual. The mechanic at (dealer name removed) stated that greasing and bolt torquing needed to be done twice as much as the manual states. Despite all of this, (dealer name removed) refused to cover these repairs under warranty and billed us over $700. We were denied access to complete records with regards to this and all other issues. Recently, my husband found a crack in the dipper for the backhoe. We called (dealer name removed) and emailed photos. He advised that this tractor had no other backhoe options and never returned our request for warranty coverage. We had to pay to have it repaired. About the same time, the cylinder on the backhoe began bleeding off at such a rate that it often takes two of us to operate the equipment to prevent the dipper from dragging when it becomes necessary to move the tractor to continue digging. After several days of waiting, we were advised that they could not get one but that we could feel free to try and find one elsewhere. This remains unfixed and continues to be a problem. Last week, the tractor again stuck in first gear, further delaying construction of our home. We are currently living in our camper and are now at risk of being stuck in the camper throughout the harsh winter. My 55-year-old husband with health issues is out in 90 degree temperatures attempting to complete tasks by hand while our $30,000.00 tractor sits useless. This has caused us immeasurable stress, frustration, time and money.

Pros: Mahindra makes a good strong tractor
Cons: Mahindra needs to upgrade the attachments for such a strong tractor and get the known transmission issue fixed

MAHINDRA4500 Mahindra
Outstanding Value For The Money
Model Year: 2003

I bought this tractor used when the hour meter said 425. I haven't put a new meter on it, but change oil and top fluids once per year, sometimes twice depending on how much I'm using it. I love this tractor. I have moved an incredible amount of dirt with heavy rocks, dug footings, mowed fields, plowed snow with a gravel driveway of half a mile long, and repaired the road with a box blade. Mine is equipped with a 245 loader with quick disconnect bucket. It will lift as much as you can put in the bucket. My dad's smaller Kabota will not do that. If you fill his bucket with dirt the tractor doesn't have the power to pick it up. Four-wheel drive is a must with a loader. The best part is starting this tractor in the winter. It can be -10 Fahrenheit and it starts right up every time. I love it.

Pros: Excellent value, heavy duty machine
Cons: It could use just a bit more horsepower for this size tractor but this is a very minor complaint, gear down and it will pull it

Very satisfied with the tractor. The loader unit control I am disappointed with. It does have a locking left rear brake.

Pros: Great tractor.
Cons: Loader unit no replacement parts available.

My Tractor
Model Year: 2004

Owned since 2004 and not one item has gone wrong. Sits for 4-5 months at a time and starts right away. Out works my friend's 50 hp John Deere and weights a lot more which makes it more stable.

Pros: Best tractor I have owned.
Cons: None.

MAHINDRA4500 Mahindra
Mahindra 4WD 4500, Open Cab, Front End Loader
Model Year: 2006

I bought this Mahindra 4wd, 4500 from Rick Bailes at Bill's Tractor just outside of San Antonio roughly 5-6 years ago. I have approx 60 acres of pasture, so I don't use it to "farm" with, but mostly shredding, disking, moving dirt, moving big round bales, moving rocks, picking up stuff, etc. (general tractor stuff). I can tell you that I have VERY PLEASED with it. No major repairs and always starts & runs well. I did have the front tires filled with foam (rides a bit rougher on the rocks, but a +++ in my opinion when moving big round bales). For the price, I think it was the best VALUE going. I wanted to make sure I bought a "small BIG tractor" vs. a "big SMALL tractor" (i.e. didn't want a non-tractor company tractor). I didn't realize that Mahindra was an Indian company or that they were one of the larger producers of tractors in the world. Nice, well built, heavy duty, easy to use tractor. Really, the only negative I have is that all the fill points, fluid check dip sticks, etc. are a pain in the butt to get to (not well laid out) and the oil change valve has a flimsy bracket that keeps the oil from draining straight out. They want you to take it off. I simply cut a hole in the bracket where the oil drains, no more taking it off.

Pros: Weight, heavy built, ease of use, overall value.
Cons: Fill plugs, fluid check dip sticks, drain plugs are not well placed/designed.

Good Tractor
Model Year: 2003

Very efficient for a 45 HP. heavy enough to get the big round bales in. Reliable to the hilt. Let is sit for 4 months and come out and start it right up. A copy of the American tractor, but they have done a good job in maintaining the quality and practicality of the tractor. I would recommend it to anyone. Value for the $ is outstanding.

Pros: Reliability/weight.
Cons: Could use another set of hydraulics, but that is for the larger hp versions.

Rock Solid Mahindra 4500
Model Year: 2003

Have owned this tractor since it was new August of 2003, Besides oil changes, one battery, this tractor has been unstoppable. Based on the value at the time of purchase, and the performance I have received, I feel this was a terrific purchase.

Pros: Weight, lifting capacity, overall power.
Cons: Low end torque.

Mahindra 4500
Model Year: 2004

I'm a casual tractor user, with only 250 hours in 7 years. I have enjoyed using the Mahindra 4500, especially the front end loader. Having to clear wooded areas for planting fields has put a lot of stress on the tractor and it has performed flawlessly.

Pros: Great value; great warranty; solid tractor.
Cons: Seems to use more fuel than my old Ford tractor doing similar work. No big deal though.

Awesome Tractor
Model Year: 2004

The 4WD, wide stance and 7,000 pound weight (with loader) has made this the ideal tractor for the Ozark hills. I've gone up and down, as well as along the side of steep hills, even with a seed drill, and have had no problems as this tractor has a wide stance and is very heavy. I also use it to grade our steep driveway and it performs beautifully. The backhoe attachment from Wood's works pretty well but is a bit of a pain to hook up. I've used the bucket to knock down trees 12"+ in diameter. This is one rugged tractor!

Pros: Price, performance, heavy weight.
Cons: Dealer was unfriendly and a pain to deal with after the sale. No longer in business.

MAHINDRA4500 Mahindra
Mahindra 4500
Model Year: 2001

I use my 2001 Mahindra 4500 mostly for bush-hogging, clearing brush, and general cleanup. When it is not being used it is housed in my shop. I have used it with a spring harrow, a bush hog, a rototiller, scrape blade, box scrape and FEL. In the 200 some hours I put on it since I have owned it, it has performed admirably and reliably with two notable exceptions. The first is the starter needed rebuilding at about 300 hours. The second is the alternator went out and needed replacing at around 420 hours. I expected much longer life out of these two components. I hope their early failure is not reflective of the long term reliability of the rest of the tractor.

Pros: Heavy tractor, high capacity three point lift.
Cons: Early failure of alternator and starter.

Mahindra 4500 with ML260 loader
Model Year: 2006

I have only had the tractor about 3 months and put about 40 hours on it. It was a trade in one owner tractor (the owner upgraded to 4 wheel drive). So far the tractor seems to do well. It is my first tractor so it is a learning experience.

Pros: Strong loader, fuel economy seems very good.
Cons: I wish it had a shuttle shift. Moving dirt is a lot of shifting.

Buy what you need it for "Specifically"
Model Year: 2008

The Mahindra 4500 is good tractor for small farm work. I was bushogging a 45 acre field with it. This tractor will turn a 6' bushog and does decent in heavy Bahia grass. The 370 loader is very handy and well worth the money. Be sure what size tractor you need before buying it, you can't return it for a bigger one without taking a loss. I wish I had bought a 60hp 4 wheel drive.

Pros: Price, Availability, Local dealer, affordable financing
Cons: Light duty, will get stuck easy

MAHINDRA4500 Mahindra
Mahindra 4500 4X4 w/FEL
Model Year: 2003

My Mahindra, "The Critter", has done just about everything asked of it. It's weight is a definite positive. Had a hard time finding a compatible QA. Settled on one built by Ottawa. A plus to the Ottawa QA are the built in bale spears. The loader is a Great Bend, apparently not used on a whole lot of Mahindra models. This is what caused the difficulty finding the compatible QA. Should have had extra remotes installed on the rear. Comes with two as standard. Eventually will add four more to enable the installation of a TnT. Had the rear tires filled with antifreeze and the dealer, Angus Valley Equipment, Elm Mott, TX, installed 500# of wheel weights at no extra charge. Definitely no need for a ballast box with all that weight. Have since added a canopy and a Markham toothbar. Great additions! Learned of both on TBN, thanks everyone.

Pros: Quality for the $.
Cons: Technical support trying to solve a chronic coolant hose problem.
