Winter traction.....

Excellent! I don't know why I missed this thread to begin with. It had been addressed and rather well.

I think it's one of those subjects that keeps getting recycled.

I run chains on all four tires on my JD 755 with turf tires and this thing is unstoppable even in 3 feet of heavy wet snow. The chains also work great when you need added traction pulling 3 different pickup trucks out of ditches snow banks etc.... and that was just this last storm LOL !

I've been running chains on the front tires only on my 1998 Cub Cadet 7260 since the first winter I bought it. Never had a problem. I have a 1/4 mile gravel drive that has a pretty good grade on about half of it, and plow it with a 7' 3pt blade. I've got chains for the rears, but have never used them.

Something I found interesting, and pointed out to the salesman, was that two of the photos on the Kubota calendar he gave me showed Kubota tractors in the snow with chains on the front only. He didn't have a good answer about that besides that they, the dealership, didn't recommend chains on the front axle.
So far all my B's have done pretty well in the snow on turfs without chains. We don't get much ice here so your results may vary:D.

I ran chains on all four tires in the winter on my JD650 for 20 years. I never had a problem. I always figured if you have enough weight on the back of the tractor (front end light) and the front tires could break loose before the back tires you would be fine. I still believe that and of course this would hold true with or without front chains.

The other thing to think about when only chaining the front is brakes. If you chain the front only and hit the brakes, you are loading the entire drivetrain by transferring the braking from the rear wheels (with no traction) to the front (with traction) via it. If this is a problem or not, I can't say, but doesn't sound good.

And.......what happens if just one front tire gets a LOT more traction than the other and the backs have little traction ? You can pivot around in a circle! Happened to me once one winter long ago in an 1970 Pontiac 2+2. :D (I know...highly unlikely on a tractor but makes for a good mental picture, eh)
