Lack of penetration is the problem very clear in this picture. I see little
evidence of beveling. The yellow lines show the limit of penetration, does
not matter how much preheat, fancy super duper rod or post heat you use.
You have lack of fusion, it will fail.

Spoken like a true Chemical Engineer, (day job). :D

Ron I was just going by the picture. But now I too believe they are mild steel, but you got to admit that's some nasty looking steel / break. :confused2:

It is a typical fatigue failure the material has been worked back and
forth thousands of time likely do to loose fittings. Each time the crack
widening and the surface getting micro peened, looks funky but just
plain old HR steel. See it in old Ag equipment all them time.

But I'd still use 7018. With a double bevel. ;)

Thanks for the drawing, I was only 1 for 3 on proper technique.

I only had the bevel right, but I didn't have a gap at all so therefore my 'point' was non-existent.
