Hit a bear, what about the bumper?

/ Hit a bear, what about the bumper? #21
Last Friday after Thanksgiving, I was driving back from my in-laws to work a night shift for a colleague who had OOT family visiting. I was in my GMC 2500 PU truck on the interstate. About 20 miles from my destination (I had already covered about 200), I had an accident of sorts. A reasonably large black bear (estimated about 200 lbs.) crossed over the oncoming lanes of traffic, hurdled the concrete barrier between the lanes and landed about two feet in front of my truck which was going about 60 mph. Since it was dark, there was nothing I could do to avoid the collision with the animal. I was in the passing lane with a large number of vehicles behind me, so it was impossible to safely stop at that exact time. In my rearview, I saw the bear still airborne flying over the emergency lane. It did not appear that it hit any other cars in the other two lanes to the right of mine, but I have a hard time thinking it survived this impact. At the next exit, I surveyed the damage and the only thing I could see is that my front bumper took a large impact in the right frontal area and has a large dent in it. The fairing underneath also was damaged but the painted area and grill above are fine (not a scratch) and the truck drives just fine (no damage to the steering or front suspension). Aside from feeling bad for the bear, I also felt bad about my truck as I have tried to take tip-top care of it (I love it--not quite as much as my wife, but close) and it has had nary a scratch on it.

My question, after all that, is that our insurance adjuster came by today and has made a claim estimate to replace my bumper, needed moulding and brackets, and license bracket. It appears there will be no other parts needed unless something else turns up. He said that his company approved the use of "aftermarket replacement parts" for my bumper/brackets. Thankfully, never having had to have repairs before, I am not familiar with exactly what this means. I told our adjuster and repair person that I wanted to use factory OEM parts, but how does one tell?? According to the adjuster, the GM factory parts have a 90 day warranty, but some aftermarket replacement parts have a lifetime warranty and he implied many came from the same supplier that supplied to GM itself. Aside from inspecting the bumper/mounting parts when they come in, how can I be assured that the level of part being placed on the truck is "factory level??" The adjuster indicated to me that many replacement parts are better than the originals, but that did not sound correct to me--as in general I have found it tough to beat the factory spec. This stated, he did seem both honest and helpful so I did not have the impression that he was misleading me. I just want my truck repaired, but have seen some highly suspect replacement parts in the past and do not want to get burned. Realizing this is a small deal relative to a vehicle with a more-serious crash I still appreciate the insight and advice. In the end, I spent the $$ made working extra to pay for the deductible on the claim.

They will use GM parts if you Pay the difference. This is the thing they do, no big deal even though one of those shows like 20/20 or dateline or somebody makes you think that it is bad.

We took our Toyota to the Toyota body shop (the chosen one in town anyway) to repair another drivers damage to the wifes toyota. They use aftermarket parts there as well.

My truck is a 2009 model with just over 70K and is in immaculate condition. I did speak with my selected body shop prior to this and the shop operator essentially stated what ultimately was told me by the adjuster, that many "aftermarket" parts are of as good or better quality and have a better warranty. This shop is not local to me, but has been independently recommended to me by several people and my dealer (who does not have an onsite body shop). It was also an approved shop by my company. Tom, I appreciate your opinion (and asked for it), but I am not "insisting" personally on a more expensive repair for "no good reason". In my case, I feel my vehicle is a top notch, well-maintained and high residual value vehicle (which it is). John M

Not really top notch if you have 70K miles on an 09 truck thats 23K miles per year. Sorry but the vehicle appraiser folks consider you high mileage and ding you for that.

I dont really agree with that thought though, miles are a number to me and i rather have a truck driven 20K miles a year than one driven 10K miles a year in the city.

The Jacksonville Jaguars just announced that they are selling their team to a new owner...... What does that have to do with this thread ?????

The new owner also is the owner of Flex & Gates. They manufacture bumpers. They are the company who supplies the "Big Three" and Toyota with bumpers. They started as a third-party supplier.

My guess would be - it would not matter if the bumper comes from GM or after-market. Chances are it will be made by Flex & Gates.

Before the Jags made their announcement, I would not have known that ... but I researched the new owner.

His point is that the new owner of some random football team is the owner or a company called Flex and one called Gates or one called Flex & Gates? Not sure if this is the same company Gates that makes belts and hoses?

His point is that they supply major companies with stuff like bumpers , so his point is that this is a third party and possibly they come from this company.

But there are a lot of china made bumpers as well and different specs as well from the same companies like f&g.

Nate, prior to my accident, my dealer had offered me 67% of my original purchase price (the OTD price, including tax) on trade for a 2011 or 2012. That's how top notch the truck is. Not too bad for a truck with over 70K that's about three years old. This is why I went diesel in part. Though I do not tow as much any more, I drive a good bit and having a truck this comfortable that gets 20-23 on the highway on average is not too bad. For comparison, none of the Acuras we have had which my wife drives (we have had 6 of them) have averaged over 50% TIV v. purchase price with similar mileage. Even in that level of car, as repeat customers, we have not been able to duplicate that percentage. This is one of several reasons we run them 100-120K before looking to trade, where we used to more often. I am sure other brands would be similar.

My son had come home for the weekend from Norwich University up in Vermont and left to go back to school in the evening and hit a moose @ 60mph on Route 100 @ junction 102 in Vermont at 60mph, fortunately he was driving my old 1990 Dodge W250 CTD that I purchased new.
It came out of nowhere and he didn't even have a chance to touch the brakes.
He pulled over got out & looked for the moose but couldn't find it. Then terror hit him he thought that 1 Pissed off moose was on the loose.
He found it under the truck and called the Troopers. The officer told him he was very lucky and estimated it at 800 to 1000 lbs.
Having a full size truck has its merits it certainly saved his life and was drive able with surprisingly little damage which amounted to a slightly V shaped bumper and some burned out headlights.
Size does matter!

I guess if the Jacksonville Jaguars is "some random football team" then so are the 31 other teams in the NFL.

Also, FLEX-N-GATE is one company who makes aftermarket and OEM parts for cars, including bumpers for GM. Most likely the bumper that was on the truck and the one that will be replacing it came from Flex-N-Gate. Gates Belts is an entirely different company and has nothing to do with bumpers However, if his truck needs any belts replaced, they very possibly could be made by Gates.

Yea there all random to me. I honestly dont see the fasination with a bunch of men running around in tight uniforms on a field? Yea it must be cause i never played football and am jealous right. Really i only have a slight interest in college football that only centers around my almamater, i dont get bummed if i miss a game or anything like that.

So yes to me they all are Random football teams and i really dont care who plays for who or what or who won what. Honestly i can say that about all pro sports. But someone must really care as there all over the TV and they pay those folks crazy money for salaries and endorsements.
