I got in the habit of inserting the drill bit upside down in the drill index when i felt it wasnt cutting the best it could. After i had 4-6 of them upside down, i bring out the DD and sharpen those up.

Has been working great.

Thats pretty smart move.;)

I've read all this on other threads and have come to this conclusion.

Those that learned the correct way to sharpen drill bits by hand aren't interested in a Drill Doctor and really don't need one.

Those that want and need a drill DD are mostly of the second group that never learned the free hand way of sharpening, aren't interested in learning that process and that's OK too.

To me each group is correct if that's what works for you.

I do commend the inventor of the DD for the thoughts that were involved in the development process as he must have stayed up late many many nights.

I also commend my late shop teacher for having the knowledge and patients to teach a class how to correctly sharpen twist drill bits and how to correctly use and maintain a bench grinder. That lesson has been invaluable to me over the years. And there are times I wish I could pass that skill on in these times of fading ways.

Would you consider doing an instruction thread / class on this? Seems to me you could pass on an invaluable skill to literally thousands. I, for one, could use some help in my doddering years as I was never given any instruction in the art of sharpening anything. I have managed in my clumsy way to get some larger bits to make a hole again after breaking off - don't ask how I did that:ashamed::confused2: - it just happened. I look forward to learning from you, or anyone who cares to "take up the torch":)

I second that motion, Norm. C'mon Sandbur, pass the torch on to us younger codgers so the flame never goes out! I hand sharpn my axes and chainsaw blades, but someone showed me how. I've considered buying a DD because it's obvious when you are using a bit that has become dull and I want to fix it right there rather than just harden the steel I'm trying to drill into. What gear do I need and what's the technique?

I have the DD and like it. I would suggest that you do learn how to sharpen a bit with a grinder as it really helps you understand what went wrong if a bit you've sharpened doesn't seam to cut. It's kind of like learning math, if you just learn how to push buttons on a calculator then you really have no way of knowing if the answer it spit out is right.
