How Strong is the JD Cab's Glass

Are you joking right ...i've seen birds break windows, my brother in law worked for autoglass said it happens a lot on outdoor stored equipment .

OK i should'nt say sparrow for the perfectionists on here but smaller than my fist .

I've been around cab tractors since the 70's and had pebbles throw by rotary mowers hit windows and they didn't break. I don't call myself a perfectionist but I've seen birds fly into a single pane house window and not break it so I don't believe a flying sparrow will break a SAFETY GLASS. I've hit birds driving at highway speeds in my pickup and not even cracked the windshield. All I asked was if you had FACTS.

You know... I got really p!ssed at my wife one day a few years ago! She calls me - all up in the air - 'cause she's stuck. Slid off the road when she pulled over to let a big motorhome go past on the narrow gravel road we live on.

OK.

I get there to pull her out - and the windshield on our Ford E350 4x4 van is "spidered"! Big cracks spread the full width of the windshield! What in the h@ll??

Seems that she hit a low hanging alder branch. And that 3/4" branch wrecked the windshield @ less than 5mph!

So... **** happens! Even when you'd least expect it..

if the glass is the same as the glass that john deere uses in the dozers and such, then it is nowhere near as brittle as d7e makes it out to be.I have ran sat all day on rock piles gettin my *** kick by the tracks slamming on rocks as well as tracking through the woods for land clearing. Same goes for all of cats machines from d6-d8's. Never have a saw one glass on any cab break. Been in mass excavation feild for almost 20 years. I have seen glass break from vandals but thats about it.By the way d7e is talking, seen 3000/4000 series cab machines glass break, he sees this happen not only once, but on a regular basis just by running over a bump in the road. No offense to you d7e cause i dont want to start a war but your stories on cab glass is a tad bit far fetched buddy.

only stories i read about on here w/ 3000 or 4000 series glass breaking is from removing loader on uneven surface and having it come through and break the bottom glass

I broke out the door on my 5525. I left the door open and caught a branch. Made me so made that I went to the dealer, bought the door and changed it out in an hour. By the way, reuse the original gasket because it it continuos. The replacement is cut to fit and you end up with a joint.

Short story long, if it is not laminated glass it does not take much.

When I first got my 110tlb and installed the cab I wondered about the strength of the glass doors. I soon found out that they are pretty tough, while taking the tractor home late one evening I failed to notice that I had left the right hand door unlatched. Somewhere on the drive home the wind caught the door and tore it off the hinges. The glass was between the trailer side rail and the outside of the rear right wheel. Didn't break the glass and all I had to buy was new hinges.

While I learned my lesson about double checking the doors and windows I have often wondered what the chances are of that happening. I considered myself to be extremely lucky that day. The trailer is about 80 inches wide between the rails and the tractor is 72 inches wide. Doesn't leave much room for the glass to fall into considering the tractor was centered on the trailer.

That said I don't know how much the glass can take and I don't wan't to experiment to find out but moving slowly to reduce impact I suspect it is tougher than most people think. I keep a Florian pole saw on my service truck to trim branches with and use it as needed.

Norm Crosby would be proud of you. :D

Unless you purposely chose to use a malaprop here, the word you're looking for is ornithologist.

Yeah, I was wondering how tough the glass was. I do not see any test results online from JD about how tough the glass is unless I am looking in the wrong place. My concern is that I have open meadows, but also woods with trails and park like spaces. You know how it is, turn your head back for a minute to make sure you do not hit a stump with the mower and then, whack, you hit a branch. Of course it used to be my face, but now it will be the cab's glass. I will need to trim stuff back, but you always seem to miss one or two of those branches. So based on what people are stating I need to be extra careful as a precaution, correct? Thanks for all the insights.
