Ive spent a few weeks drawing up plans for a 24' x 30' two story (miniature) horse barn using 6x6 poles 10 feet apart for 30 foot walls and 8feet for the 24 foot walls. The dimensions were decided by the best fit for the land and I've decided to push the outer posts up to 10' 10" so I have enough room above 8'10" for a usable second story. The rafters will run along the 30 foot length and I want 8 feet by the time I get to my center poles leaving me with a 6/10 roof pitch... Is this too steep? I am using double 2x10 for headers and 16" OC 2x6 rafters with a 2x8 ridge board.

I've been to Morton's to look at their "laminated" posts, they had three rows of six inch nails staggered and space 4". There did not seem to be any glue, I could see through where the poles joined together in places. Irregardless, they will not sell straight lumber, they want to build it.

So I've called Fitch lumber, Talbert lumber, tar heel lumber... No one here seems to even recognize the concept of laminated 2x poles. None of these places have ANY ground contact treated 2x wood, not even for a sill girt. I can custom order but that means having a full list of what I need and I would like someone who knows something about pole barns to take a look at my plans... and evidently these concepts are foreign for my area. Can I get any advice on obtaining wood in NC?

By the way, first time poster. I don't have a real tractor yet but my John deer has a 24HP engine and I haul stuff with it, and go bogging in our clay (ok, what that really means is I've gotten a riding mower stuck) Hi!

I am surprised that Tar heel Treating does not have ground contact 2x material. I think there is one other PT company in Chatham county.

I have seen a pole barn made with posts made of 2x6's. Pretty sure it was a Morton but it was built many years ago. There were not gaps in those 2x6 posts.

If you want someone to look at the plans you are likely going to have pay an engineer. An inspector might look over the plans and point out something obvious. Will you have to have a stamped plan to get a building permit?

We found a place online called Hansen's Polebarns, and if you give them some parameters, they'll send you a free estimate with specs, design parameters, and make sure it meets your local codes. They even sent us a .pdf file of the plans/design parameters. Then tell them you aren't going to need them. The information I got from them helped us with our eventual plans and in negotiating with our eventual builder.

Their prices weren't outrageous but we found a cheaper local source.

They did have laminated posts made in-house and IIRC, they were glued too.

Hoping this helps,
Thomas

I'm considering using www.socketsystems.com for a barn I'll eventually build. They have engineering info online, can help with custom plans, and eliminate the need for PT lumber. I think someone here may have built a barn using that system, because I learned about it here a few years back.

Thanks for the link, I'll keep it for possible future reference [I'm sure we'll outgrow our 30'X40' barn soon, even though it looks HUGE empty] as I have 20+ years of salvaged and purchased metal and wood stock, electrical parta and pieces, hardware, metal-working power and hand tools, ditto woodworking, and ALL of the tools and fittings my F-I-L left from his 38 years in his garage and basement left here from when they moved out to an approx 275-300 sq ft out-law appt at my S-I-L's house, which also includes all of HIS father's [a retired toolmaker] assorted tools and dreck.

Wow, even redacted you received a more detailed quote than I did! :scratchchin: I was not too impressed. :2cents:

If you cannot find 2x for ground contact you could look at using permacolumn. And still use the laminated 2x.

https://permacolumn.com/what-are-perma-columns

I am looking into this for my building and Morten uses this in the eastern part of the state some. A friend of mine just had a large pole barn built by Morten here in western NC and they used laminated 2x rated for ground contact.
