I wonder if you can rent an Ultra High Pressure pressure washer somewhere? We use UHP pressure washers to strip the decks on the ship right down to bare steel. In fact, if you let it sit in one spot and don't keep it moving, it will gauge divots in the steel. We use super tough and durable paint too. One of those (and even much less powerful) would easily strip the trailer down to bare steel, and it would be easy and quick to do, with no more prep work once it dries.

Definitely don't paint the white oak boards. They are extremely rot resistant and have been used historically for sill timbers on old timber framed buildings for that reason. They will last longer NOT painted, and look nicer too!

I would just take it to a car wash blast the crud of . And paint it with black $10 gallon trailer paint and be done . It will take years for the rust to come through . O and I live close enough to a ton of trailer building company's to get supply's at there cost .

Can you explain more on this asphalt fence paint? How well do you have to prep the surface? Does the material hold moisture underneath it and rust? Does it flake off? Do you prime first and if not would primer be desirable? Any info helpful since this is new to me.

as it is oil based it will very likely float water up off of it. on wood, mind you.. the woods gonna have natural moisture in it.. etc.over 10ys old now.. still no issues. the metal that had the paint on it still has it. it's gotten dry / matte looking.. but still there.

i did no priming...

i used it for it's waterproofing and pest resistance on the wood primarily.

when i went under the trailer a couple years ago to rewire brakes. found no rust.. so that's a nice side benefit... and i'm in humid florida...

I've painted my trailers with it. have a deck that is

Soundguy--thanks for info. I was completely unaware of that product.

i have a farm.. it's common for people that keep horses to have large sections of wood fencing for the horses.. and wire fencing for the things with horns and udders.

the asphalt paint makes the wood last very long.. adn discourages anythign chewing on it. especially horses. inhibits fungal growth.. termites.. etc. i went a step further and spent the money for cresote post and board and then topepd em with asphalt paint. my fence is 13ys old.. no bowed or rotten wood.

neighbors on either side of me have been thru plenty of fencing in that time.. :)

i figured they probably had something like that.

similar price?

$40 for the 5 gallons.

After tonight i am regretting letting you talk me into this.

I just got done power washing it and boy was that an adventure. I always end up wetter than whatever I am washing, and it seems I end up with more dirt on me than came off whatever I was washing.

But thats not the real issue. My washer is old. It seems every year the starter rope breaks and it gets shortened. This year was no different. First pull...snap. So I re-tie, and next pull, the recoil spring breaks:mur:

Luckily this briggs 9hp vanguard starts easy. I took the starter off and just wound a rope around the shaft and yanked. Third time it started. it has not been ran in over a year.

It was dark when I finished, so I'll see how it looks when I get home from work tomorrow. Wife is going to TSC tomorrow to get the paint. Any change this stuff can be thinned down enough to spray and still be as effective??

Off to search google for a new starter and some DOT tape/stickers now...

i'm sure you can thin it enough to spray. run it thru a paint strainer though.. it will likely have solids in it.

I'd use a wagner type with a liberal tip. no way i'd try an automotive paint gun....

wow.. 40$.. thats robery. cheaper here. lowes in my area even carries it... yikes.. i guess the more north ya go.. the more $$

I rollered mine after thinning with MS and alotta stirring.. :) it's like tar when you get it. :) or mine was anyway..
