It appears all of the big three were originally going to adopt the new SAE tow ratings but only Ram is going to do it. It appears Rams tow rating will stay the same or increase. I can only speculate that Ford and GM passed because it would hurt their tow ratings and maybe Ram has been pretty much on the safe side with their tow ratings. I've provided a link to a site where this is discussed. Its a Mopar site so I'm taking the news with a grain of salt but they tend to be pretty accurate.

News: Ram switching to SAE tow ratings (with video)

I was under the impression that Ford was going to do it for the '15 model year, at least for the F150. Not sure about the F250+.

Toyota and Nissan have been using this for 3 to 5 years now.

There has to be a issue with the SAE system if the two biggest players are declining to use it.

Wrong.

Nissan hasn't submitted their consumer trucks to this testing yet.

So who's gonna be first to cite a source for this?

As to why Ford/GM are not useing it. The only reason I can think of is they don't compare well in the tests so we don't want to use them and will stick to our marketing materials for our "ratings".

I did a little more research and it looks line Ram and Toyota are the only ones using the SAE tow ratings. Looks like GM isn't. The above link that says they are is 3 years old and I'm guessing the didn't adopt it.

That's good, it does appear GM is on board with the tow ratings. Lets hope Ford does also.

The Ford F150 will adopt the standards for '15.

https://media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/fna/us/en/news/2014/07/22/all-new-ford-f-150-2-7liter-ecoboost-v6-engine-delivers.html

Ford testing shows the 2.7-liter EcoBoost also outperforming Ram 1500 3.0-liter V6 EcoDiesel and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 5.3-liter V8 while towing a 7,000-pound enclosed trailer up Davis Dam in Arizona. This is the same grade the Society of Automotive Engineers uses for its J2807 towing testing standards, which the 2015 Ford F-150 will follow.

I like to see that ford is using more aluminum. I hope it encourages Dodge and the others to also use it more.
For now, it helps make fords capacity #'s look better, by reducing the vehicle weight.

Not just LOOK better, they ARE better due to the lighter vehicle weight. Ford has mentioned all along that reducing vehicle weight allows for better payload numbers. Measuring like vehicles (SuperCrew Lariat 4x4), the F150 dropped 732 lbs from '14 to '15. You gotta admit, that's pretty substantial and very impressive!

They have to do something to keep up with the Dodge/RAM innovations.
It's win/win for customers either way they choose.
